The unbeaten Bob Baffert trainee received a 100 Beyer speed figure for his victory in the American Pharoah Stakes (G1) and will travel to Keeneland as the likely favorite; U.S.S. Valor will not contest the race

ARCADIA, California (Special for Turf Diario).— Hughes handled his first experience around two turns with such authority that the question is no longer about his distance aptitude, but rather who will be able to stop him in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1). One day after rolling to a 6-length victory in the American Pharoah Stakes(G1-1700m), the colt was enjoying a quiet Sunday morning in the barn of Bob Baffert at Santa Anita, showing no signs that the effort had sapped his well-being.

“He came out of the race in great shape. Now we’re on to the Breeders’ Cup,” commented Jimmy Barnes, the veteran assistant to the trainer. Baffert had been on hand for Saturday’s triumph but had already departed for Kentucky to oversee his string there.

The victory guaranteed Hughes a fees-paid berth in the Juvenile, which will offer a $2 million purse on October 30 at Keeneland. There, he looms as the likely favorite, backed by an undefeated record and a performance that confirmed his ability to carry his speed over route distances.

According to Barnes, a precise date for him to join Baffert’s Kentucky division has not yet been finalized, though he noted the trip will happen soon.

In the American Pharoah, the son of Into Mischief made his move wide through the far turn, took command, and drew clear down the lane to establish a 6-length margin. Jockey Juan Hernández was even able to gear him down in the closing strides, a detail that only heightened the impression of dominance.

His winning time of 1m43s22/100 earned him a 100 Beyer speed figure, the highest recorded this season by a 2-year-old at distances of a mile or longer. That figure also placed him well clear of the winners of Saturday’s other two premier juvenile features.

At Belmont Park, U.S.S. Valor (War of Will) earned a 95 Beyer for his victory in the Champagne Stakes (G1), run over a one-turn mile. The representative of Team Valor International had previously posted a 105 Beyer when breaking his maiden over 1400 meters at Saratoga, though that effort came around a single turn.

However, a potential showdown between the two will have to wait. On Sunday morning, Barry Irwin, head of Team Valor International, announced that U.S.S. Valor will pass on the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, a major defection from the race’s landscape.

Meanwhile, American History, winner of the Breeders’ Futurity (G1-1700m) at Keeneland, posted an 85 Beyer. Comparing those performances only solidifies the standing of Hughes, who will enter the championship event having passed every test put before him.

The American Pharoah marked his second G1 triumph and elevated his record to a perfect 4 wins from as many starts, with $480,000 in earnings. During the summer at Del Mar, he had captured the Best Pal Stakes (G3-1200m) and the Del Mar Futurity (G1-1400m), before extending his domain to 1700 meters.

Purchased for $675,000 at the 2025 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, Hughes races for a prominent ownership syndicate that includes Front Row Club, Starlight Racing, Madaket Stables, and Stonestreet Stables.

From early sprint speed to route efficiency around two turns, the colt has broadened his arsenal while remaining untouched by defeat. Keeneland will present his biggest test yet, with the opportunity to convert an flawless campaign into a national championship.
