LA PLATA.- At seven years old, when it seemed her best form might be behind her, Illa Alegre rolled the dice, stretched out farther than ever before, and came away with one of the most valuable prizes of her career on Thursday at La Plata. With striking ease, the daughter of Sabat Husson captured the Clásico Hipódromo Independencia de Rosario (G3) over 2000 meters, defeating a short but high-quality field that had proven itself on the main stages of Palermo and San Isidro.

Most mares her age would already be in a paddock, either in foal or raising one. But the chestnut filly owned by Stud El Barrial, bred and trained by Fabio H. Mentucci, clearly isn’t following that script. Instead, she continues to surprise, thriving at a demanding trip and opening a new chapter in her career.

Winner earlier this year of the Handicap Haras de la Pomme and the Clásico Otelo A. Orlandi (L), Illa Alegre hadn’t been performing up to that level recently. But under Iván Monasterolo, she rediscovered her best form. Sitting comfortably off the pace, she allowed Poker Mommy (Daddy Long Legs) to take the lead, closely followed by Soy La Líder (Manipulator).

As the gray mare faded to last, Illa Alegre began to make her move down the center of the track. Once they straightened for home, she took full control and drew off convincingly to score by two lengths over La Guernica (Il Campione), with Foggy of Song (Sixties Song) another three back in third. Soy La Líder and Poker Mommy completed the order of finish. The final time was an excellent 2:03.53, with reasonable early fractions.

Out of a mare by Intérprete (Farnesio), and boasting the same female family as the unforgettable Festín (Mat-Boy), Illa Alegre now owns seven wins from 21 starts, surpassing 27 million pesos in earnings. She has established herself as a leading long-distance mare at La Plata—a path that could culminate in December’s Clásico Los Criadores (G2). But before that, on November 19, she’ll likely shorten up for the Clásico Marcos Levalle (G2)—a mile test that, more often than not, proves irresistible.
