The daughter of Equal Stripes, a full-sister to Grade 1 winner Infartame and Grade 2 winner Issa, was purchased for $50,000 by Stud Laredo

With purses at an all-time low and daily training rates and expenses soaring, it should come as no surprise that even at the most prestigious auctions from top-tier operations, the market is showing clear symptoms of crisis. What transpired this Tuesday at Haras Abolengo’s Gran Venta Estrellas was the clearest indicator yet that the current situation is highly challenging. Thoroughbred owners appear to be on standby, waiting to see how the country’s eternal financial struggles and the inner economics of racing unfold, where the math simply does not add up for anyone.

While inflation has recently cooled, the country’s premier tracks have failed to increase purses for several months, following previous adjustments that were only dropped in dribs and drabs. The situation is even more critical at La Plata, where the introduction of alternative lower-level categories to its racing programs slashed purse distributions by nearly 50 percent.

Out of the 60 yearlings listed in the catalog, 15 failed to attract a single opening bid, while another significant lot was hammered down on the very first offer. It was not a reflection of physical conformation or pedigrees, but rather the current economic climate that forced Carlos Ezcurra and the (Arg) Sales team to work exceptionally hard under the rafters of the San Isidro Tattersall. In truth, this trend mirrors what has been observed since the start of the sales season: the major players have already played their hands earlier in the year, leaving intermediate and small owners motionless, waiting on the sidelines.

Predictably, the top price of the session was commanded by Inara (Equal Stripes), a full-sister to Grade 1 winner Infartame and Grade 2 winner Issa out of Infanta Elena (Lizard Island). The flashy filly was secured for $50,000 by Stud Laredo. The second highest price belonged to Aspen Girl (Cosmic Trigger), out of Aspen Days (Exchange Rate),another filly who dropped the hammer at $41,000 to trainer Nicolás Gaitán, acting on commission. Completing the top three was Ishtar (Ivar), the first foal out of the aforementioned group winner Issa (Equal Stripes), knocked down for $40,000 to Stud Vamo' Arriba.

The overall figures remained respectable under the circumstances, yielding a gross revenue of $723,000, with an average of $17,634 and a median price of $16,000. As for how the market and the industry will navigate the near future, the question remains open: if purse structures do not adjust and operational costs continue to rise, the pressure on the bloodstock market will only intensify.
