Irad Ortiz Jr. escapes fracture following scary spill, targets swift return to the saddle

The star jockey was involved in an accident during Saturday's card and was sidelined for Sunday's program, temporarily halting his charge up the standings

SARATOGA SPRINGS, New York. —Just as he appeared to have reclaimed lost ground in the Saratoga jockeys' standings, four-time defending meet champion Irad Ortiz Jr. hit an unexpected speedbump. the star rider was forced to sit out Sunday's card after sustaining a left foot injury during Saturday's program, though follow-up imaging ruled out any fractures and raised hopes for a swift return to the saddle.

the incident occurred prior to the eighth race when his scheduled mount, two-year-old colt And The Runner Is (Oscar Performance), grew unruly during the post parade. during the sequence, Ortiz planted his left foot awkwardly and suffered the injury, prompting the horse to be scratched and the jockey to be transported to Saratoga Hospital for evaluation.

initial fears centered on a potential ankle fracture, but those were quickly dispelled. subsequent X-rays on the foot also came back negative for broken bones, though significant swelling initially prevented a precise assessment of the soft-tissue damage.

"Irad is doing fine and in good spirits," said his agent, Steve Rushing, after speaking with the rider Sunday morning. "we don't expect him to be out very long."

after an evaluation by an orthopedic specialist, the diagnosis proved encouraging, with his timeline to return to competition primarily hinged on managing pain as the swelling subsides.

"the main thing right now is to wait for the swelling to go down. it's really going to be a matter of pain tolerance. he'll rest this Sunday and we'll see how he responds over the next three days," Rushing added, leaving the door open for a potential return as early as Wednesday.

the forced layoff comes at a critical juncture in the competitive meet title chase. Ortiz spotted the field a head start after missing the first six days of the standalone session due to a suspension and an out-of-state riding engagement. he countered in trademark explosive fashion, putting on a clinic with a six-win performance on July 26 that catapulted him back into serious contention for the Angel Cordero Jr. Trophy.

entering Sunday's action, the Puerto Rican native ranked fourth in the standings with 30 wins, trailing joint-leaders Flavien Prat and his brother José Ortiz (38 apiece), as well as Manny Franco (34).
