Irad Ortiz Jr. Fractures Left Ankle, Set to Miss the Breeders’ Cup

The Puerto Rican star jockey will undergo surgery following his fall on Thursday at Keeneland and faces an extended period on the sidelines. He had returned to competitive riding just 20 days ago after recovering from another fracture in the same foot. Major contenders Further Ado, Rhetorical, and Splendora are now left without their intended pilot for the upcoming Breeders' Cup

LEXINGTON, Kentucky (Special for Turf Diario).— The worst possible news was officially confirmed for Irad Ortiz Jr. and for many of the key players at the upcoming Breeders' Cup. The stellar Puerto Rican jockey suffered a fractured left ankle as a result of his spill on Thursday at Keeneland, will require surgery, and faces an extended period on the sidelines.
The news was confirmed by his agent, Steve Rushing, following initial reports of the diagnosis by David Grening of the Daily Racing Form.
The injury rules Ortiz out of the Breeders' Cup, scheduled for October 30 and 31 at Keeneland, where he was booked aboard several high-profile contenders.
The incident occurred shortly after the start of Thursday's final race when She's Good Trouble (Rock Your World), a 2-year-old filly making her second lifetime start, stumbled in her early strides out of the gate and violently dislodged the rider onto the dirt surface.
Ortiz remained down on the track as the rest of the field continued on in the 1700-meter event. In visible agony, he reached toward the lower portion of his left leg, raising immediate concerns of a serious injury.
The medical team from University of Kentucky HealthCare responded rapidly, safely removing him from the track before the field looped back around.
Following an initial assessment in the track's first-aid room, the rider was taken out on a stretcher and transported to a local hospital. He remained fully alert and conscious throughout the entire process. Meanwhile, She's Good Troublecompleted the circuit riderless alongside the field and was safely apprehended by outriders without further incident.
Two Fractures in Just Over Two Months
This latest setback is particularly cruel given Ortiz's recent medical history.
On August 8, during a prerace incident at Saratoga, he suffered fractures to seven bones in his left foot, an injury that sidelined him for nearly two months.
He had only just returned to competitive riding on October 2, coinciding with opening day of the Keeneland fall meet.
Just as he was rebuilding his momentum and preparing for one of the most vital weekends on the global racing calendar, another fall has rendered him inactive.
This time, the ankle fracture will require surgical intervention, and no timeline has been established for his return to the saddle.
The five-time Eclipse Award winner as Outstanding Jockey in the United States faces one of the most challenging periods of his career, enduring two severe injuries to the same leg in a remarkably short span.
High-Profile Mounts Left Vacant
Ortiz's absence will cause a major ripple effect in the jockey standings for the Breeders' Cup, as he was committed to several leading contenders.
Among his key assignments was Further Ado (Gun Runner), a prominent candidate for either the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) over 2000 meters or the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1) over 1600 meters.
He was also slated to ride Rhetorical (Not This Time) in the Breeders' Cup Mile (G1), one of the day's premier turf events.
Another crucial engagement was aboard Splendora (Audible), entered in the Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1), the signature main-track event for fillies and mares.
Connections must now scramble to secure replacement riders at a time when most top-tier American and international jockeys have already finalized their mounts for the World Championships.
His forced departure adds an unexpected layer of difficulty to Breeders' Cup preparations, given Ortiz's status as one of the most sought-after big-race riders in the world.
Just eight days out from the event, the star jockey's injury marks one of the most impactful pre-race developments. Beyond the competitive fallout, attention now turns to his upcoming surgery and recovery.
After overcoming a multiple foot fracture in August and returning in early October, Irad Ortiz Jr. must once again navigate a lengthy rehabilitation process while American racing temporarily loses one of its premier stars.
