LEXINGTON, Kentucky (Special for Turf Diario).— The fractured left ankle suffered by Irad Ortiz Jr. on Thursday at Keeneland triggered a frantic last-minute scramble among stables preparing for the Breeders' Cup. With just one week remaining before the start of the series, several trainers were forced to seek replacements for one of North American racing's most sought-after jockeys.

While some managed to resolve their situations swiftly, others continue to weigh alternatives—a particularly complex task given that most top-tier riders have already committed to their mounts for October 30 and 31.

One of the first updates came from trainer Will Walden, who confirmed that José Ortiz, brother of the injured rider, will pilot Rhetorical in the Breeders' Cup Mile (G1) on the turf.

The son of Not This Time represented one of Irad's marquee engagements and will now fall into the hands of José,himself among the elite ranks of American jockeys.

Another significant decision was made by Bob Baffert, who tapped Tyler Gaffalione to guide Splendora in the Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1).

The daughter of Audible stands among the key contenders in one of the weekend's flagship events for fillies and mares, prompting the California-based trainer to secure a top-level replacement without delay.

However, Baffert still has another situation pending: Salahudin, a son of Uncle Mo bound for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1), was also slated to be ridden by Ortiz.

In his case, the hall-of-fame trainer indicated he will wait until final entry day to determine who takes the mount.

Shisospicy Changes Riders

Another major shift involves Shisospicy, winner of the 2025 Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (G1) with Irad Ortiz Jr.aboard.

The daughter of Mitole will attempt to defend her crown, but this time she will be ridden by Luis Saez, as confirmed by trainer José D'Angelo.

The switch is particularly notable given Ortiz's intimate familiarity with the mare and the successful partnership they forged in last year's series.

Saez now inherits the responsibility in a race where split-second decision-making and rapid reactions are paramount.

Further Ado Still Waiting

Among the unresolved mounts is one of the most prominent on the entire card: Further Ado, conditioned by Brad Coxfor the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1).

The son of Gun Runner was one of Ortiz's premier assignments, but Cox confirmed that he had not yet locked in a replacement at press time.

Connections of Built, a son of Hard Spun targeting the Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1), are likewise still searching for a jockey.

Both circumstances highlight the immense complications caused by a late injury, particularly for horses holding genuine chances in top-level events.

A Year Plagued by Injuries

For Irad Ortiz Jr., a five-time Eclipse Award winner as Outstanding Jockey, the spill marks another painful setback in a deeply frustrating campaign.

The accident occurred Thursday when he was unseated shortly after the start of Keeneland's ninth race.

Subsequent medical evaluations confirmed a fracture in his left ankle that will require surgery, sidelining him indefinitely.

The jockey had already suffered a severe injury on August 8 at Saratoga, sustaining multiple fractures in his left foot that kept him out of action for nearly two months before his return on October 2.

Barely twenty days after resuming competition, another fall ended his hopes of participating in the Breeders' Cup.

Ortiz's absence not only deprives the event of one of its signature stars, but also forces a major realignment across several key races at Keeneland.

With José Ortiz, Gaffalione, and Saez already confirmed for select assignments, attention now shifts to the pending decisions from Cox and Baffert, as well as the plans for Built.

The countdown to the Breeders' Cup continues, but for several trainers, preparation is no longer just about the horses—it is about finding the right jockey to replace one of the best in the world.
