Irad Ortiz Jr. returns at Keeneland following an injury that threatened his season

The Puerto Rican star suffered seven minor fractures in his left foot and came close to undergoing surgery; he is booked for seven rides on Friday, a card that will also mark the return of Cristian Torres

LEXINGTON, Kentucky (Special for Turf Diario).— For several weeks, Irad Ortiz Jr. lived with the possibility that his season had come to an end. The aftermath of the incident he suffered on August 8 at Saratoga, prior to a race, proved far more severe than initially disclosed: seven minor fractures in his left foot and a surgical procedure that came remarkably close to being performed. Ultimately, his recovery will allow him to return this Friday, October 2, for the opening of Keeneland's fall meeting.

The jockey himself shared the details of his injury through an Instagram post last Monday, expressing gratitude to those who supported him through a process filled with moments of uncertainty.

“Thank God, my family, the doctors, and friends who were part of my recovery, today I can say that we are back in the saddle. It was not easy. I had seven small fractures in my foot. When they spoke to me about surgery, I thought my year was over, but thanks again to Dr. López, who decided not to go down that road, I am back,” Ortiz shared.

Surgical intervention would have meant remaining on the sidelines for the remainder of 2026. Avoiding the operating table and completing a favorable recovery transformed that outlook, allowing him to return for one of the most vital stretches on the American racing calendar.

His return features a demanding lineup: he is booked for seven rides on opening day, including two graded stakes engagements. He will climb aboard Nakatomi (Firing Line), trained by Wesley Ward, in the Phoenix Stakes (G2), and Monique En Vol (Flightline), from the Brad Cox barn, in the Jessamine Stakes (G2).

Up until his campaign was paused, Ortiz had compiled 212 victories from 875 mounts during 2026. Highlights of his year include Grade 1 triumphs aboard Renegade (Into Mischief), Further Ado (Gun Runner), and Counting Stars(Honour A.P.), credentials of a season that now resumes following a major scare.

Friday will also mark the return of Cristian Torres, another rider forced into a momentary absence from the track. The jockey was involved in a six-horse spill on September 19 at Churchill Downs, though fortunately he escaped without serious injury.

Torres has two scheduled engagements for the Keeneland opener, with Mel Went Home (Life Is Good), lined up for the Jessamine, serving as his marquee mount. Thus, the start of the autumn meet will double as a welcome comeback for two premier jockeys getting right back into the action.
