The Puerto Rican star jockey was unseated shortly after the break in Thursday's final race when his mount She's Good Trouble stumbled leaving the starting gate. He is being evaluated for a potential leg injury with just over a week remaining until the Breeders' Cup

LEXINGTON, Kentucky (Special for Turf Diario).— Deep concern swept through Keeneland on Thursday when star jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. suffered a spill shortly after the start of the final race on the card and was transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation. The incident sent shockwaves through the racing community just over a week before the Breeders' Cup takes place at the same venue on October 30 and 31.

The five-time Eclipse Award winner as Outstanding Jockey in the United States was aboard 2-year-old filly She's Good Trouble (Rock Your World), making her second career start, when she stumbled heavily leaving the gate, dislodging him violently onto the dirt surface.

Ortiz remained down on the track as the field continued. Broadcast replays showed the rider in visible discomfort, reaching toward the lower part of one of his legs.

Prompt action from the University of Kentucky HealthCare medical team allowed him to be safely attended to and removed from the track before the field completed the 1700-meter trip and returned past the spot of the accident.

Initial evaluations were conducted in the track's first-aid room before Ortiz was placed on a stretcher and transported to a nearby hospital for comprehensive diagnostic testing.

According to official information released by Keeneland, Ortiz remained fully conscious throughout the procedure.

“He is being evaluated for a potential lower extremity injury,” the track stated, without immediately providing further specifics regarding the severity of the issue.

At present, it remains uncertain whether the accident will force him to miss time in the saddle, or for how long. Meanwhile, She's Good Trouble ran on riderless alongside the field before being safely apprehended by outriders on the clubhouse turn without further incident.

Unfortunate Timing Ahead of the World Championships

The setback comes at a particularly delicate time for Ortiz, who had only just returned to competitive riding on October 2 after an eight-week absence due to a foot injury.

His timely recovery had allowed him to resume riding with an eye on the major year-end fixtures, most notably the Breeders' Cup, where he is routinely among the most sought-after jockeys in the country.

The proximity of the international series naturally heightens concern surrounding his physical condition, though any assessment regarding his availability for the event remains premature until medical results are disclosed.

Ortiz holds several high-profile commitments for the big weekend, including the mount aboard Golden Tempo(Curlin), one of the prominent contenders in the build-up to the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1).

All eyes now turn to forthcoming medical updates and the jockey's recovery process, as his status for the most important weekend on the American racing calendar is suddenly shrouded in uncertainty.

For now, the encouraging sign remains that Irad Ortiz Jr. was conscious and coherent when transported to the hospital. The extent of the potential injury and its impact on his riding schedule are yet to be determined.
