Isaac Newton Lands the Desmond Stakes and Delivers Another Historic Milestone for Aidan O'Brien

The son of Camelot confirmed his rapid rise with a decisive victory at Leopardstown, becoming the 500th individual horse trained by the Irishman to win a group race

DUBLIN, Ireland.— Leopardstown was once again the setting for another historic chapter in Aidan O'Brien's career. While the Bahrain Turf Club Desmond Stakes (G3) featured Isaac Newton as its chief protagonist on the track, the victory also signaled a new benchmark for the Ballydoyle master, as the son of Camelot became the 500th individual horse trained by him to capture a group race during his extraordinary career.

The figure speaks for itself. Since beginning his training campaign, O'Brien now boasts 500 individual group winners, broken down into 216 G1 victories, 94 G2 wins, and 190 G3 titles—a stat that underscores the magnitude of a legacy that seems to know no bounds and continues to add new chapters season after season.

Against that historic backdrop, Isaac Newton confirmed he is currently enjoying the peak form of his campaign. Fourth last year in the Criterium de Saint-Cloud (G1) and coming off three previous unplaced tries at the top level, he finally earned the reward he had been threatening to deliver with a decisive display over 1,600 meters in the Desmond Stakes.

Under Ryan Moore, the colt sat third for much of the journey, keeping close tabs on pacemaker Audience (Iffraaj), who set the tempo several lengths clear. Turning into the home straight, he began to chip away at the margin with ease, driving into second place before the final furlong and, called upon in the closing strides, took command with authority to prevail by 1 1/4 lengths over Needle Match (Night of Thunder). Audience, running a brave race after setting the pace from the start, held third by the same margin, while favorite Sparan Nua (Dawn Approach) had to settle for fourth.

"It's good that he turned out to be a miler, because that's exactly what he was showing us all along and we didn't quite believe him," O'Brien admitted post-race, reflecting on the colt's progression.

"If you watch him run, he goes through his races almost at a cruise. He has plenty of speed and could even drop back in distance if we wanted to, but he's a miler. Now he will return here to target the Boomerang Stakes (G2) during Irish Champions Weekend," the trainer revealed.

The performance confirmed that the change in approach paid off. Isaac Newton had opened his stakes account in June when landing the Flame Of Tara Stakes (L) at Navan, followed by a solid third in the Meld Stakes (G3) at The Curragh just three weeks ago.

Now he has taken an even bigger step forward. He earned his breakthrough group victory, proved the mile is his ideal trip, and, in doing so, etched his name into racing history as the horse that brought Aidan O'Brien to the monumental landmark of 500 individual group winners—yet another milestone for modern European racing's premier trainer.
