Item wraps up his season; Blue Bolt and Kalpana set sights on major targets
The winner of the Juddmonte International (G1) will rest following his sixth-place effort in the Irish Champion Stakes (G1), with trainer Andrew Balding planning a step up to 2400 meters for his 4-year-old campaign, where the Dubai Sheema Classic looms as a potential target; Blue Bolt will target the Sun Chariot Stakes before heading to the Breeders’ Cup, while Kalpana points toward the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe
NEWMARKET, England (Special for Turf Diario).— Item reached his limit at Leopardstown, and Andrew Balding has decided there is no sense in pushing him further during the remainder of 2026. The winner of the Juddmonte International (G1) will begin a period of rest, and all signs point to him bypassing Keeneland for the Breeders’ Cup, with his trainer already mapping out a 4-year-old campaign that will feature a major adjustment: stepping up to 2400 meters.
The son of Frankel entered the Irish Champion Stakes (G1) as one of the marquee names following his huge victory at York, where he prevailed by a head over Almaqam (Lope de Vega), with Constitution River (Wootton Bassett) back in third.
Leopardstown offered an immediate rematch among the trio, though none could replicate that performance.
Hotazhell (Too Darn Hot) produced a shock upset over Wimbledon Hawkeye (Kameko), while Constitution Riverfinished third and both Almaqam and Item proved non-factors in the outcome.
For Item, the trip turned complicated well before turning into the home straight. He was never able to travel with his usual fluency, had to be pushed along to maintain his position, and ultimately finished sixth, closing only after the race was virtually decided.
For Balding, the primary explanation lay in the sharp pace of the contest: “He was always a bit flat out to hold his position, and he stayed on okay in the end, but it was too late. The race was just a bit quick for him,” analyzed the trainer.
That impression convinced the team that Item’s future lies over longer trips: “The likelihood is he stays in training next year, and we look at mile-and-a-half options,” previewed Balding.
This shift in direction effectively rules out any appearance at the upcoming Breeders’ Cup.
“There is nothing really for him now, so I think he will have a nice break. He probably won’t go to the Breeders’ Cupthis year, and we can think about something like the Sheema Classic next season,” he explained.
The Dubai Sheema Classic (G1), contested over 2400 meters at Meydan, thus emerges as one of the main early international targets for Item in 2027.
The decision brings a close to a campaign that nevertheless elevated his career to another tier thanks to his breakthrough success in the Juddmonte International. Now, Balding will look to build on his physical maturity to discover whether a rise in distance can unlock another step forward.
Blue Bolt not resting yet
The situation is markedly different for Blue Bolt, another major star out of Kingsclere. The daughter of Blue Pointextended her perfect 2026 record to five straight wins with a dominant display in the Matron Stakes (G1) at Leopardstown and returned from Ireland in tip-top shape.
So much so that Balding is already considering running her back on October 3 in the Sun Chariot Stakes (G1) at Newmarket.
“She came back and only lost six kilos. She was bouncing this morning. We’ll look at the Sun Chariot; the timing works out nicely and then it would lead us seamlessly into Keeneland,” he noted.
The Breeders’ Cup therefore remains firmly on the agenda for a mare enjoying a brilliant season, who could still add another European G1 to her tally before crossing the Atlantic.
Kalpana, straight to Longchamp
Balding also confirmed that Kalpana (Study of Man) remains firmly on track for the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe(G1).
“All roads lead to Longchamp,” summarized the trainer, adding that the filly is “really in great order and very happy.”
Kingsclere thus approaches the final stretch of the calendar with distinctly different plans for three of its stable stars.
Blue Bolt still has plenty ahead between Newmarket and Keeneland; Kalpana commands all eyes at ParisLongchamp; and Item is already setting his sights on 2027. After realizing at Leopardstown that 2000 meters may be getting too sharp for him, his next campaign could well see him venturing into entirely uncharted territory.
