The Señor Candy filly, who showed promise at two, captured the Especial Miss Loren to earn the fourth and most impressive win of her career

LA PLATA, Argentina— Once heralded as a top juvenile filly, Jalimba (Señor Candy) finally flashed her early brilliance again Tuesday with a commanding, gate-to-wire victory in the Especial Miss Loren over 1500 meters on the main track—the feature event of the day at the La Plata Racecourse.
Carrying a light impost of 53 kilos (officially 54 with the listed overweight), the chestnut broke like a shot and immediately opened up daylight on her rivals—a strategy that has brought her both success and disappointment in the past. But this time, it worked to perfection.
Under a smart ride from Gonzalo Borda, Jalimba dictated terms comfortably on the front end, forcing her challengers to chase earlier than they may have liked. Borda then cleverly eased the tempo down the backstretch, allowing the field to close the gap, but once they straightened for home, Jalimba re-broke with authority and widened her lead again with ease.
At the wire, she was two lengths clear of Clare (Puerto Escondido, 52 kg), with Illa Alegre (Sabat Husson, 54 kg) another two lengths back in third. Favored Candy Fy (Fortify, 54 kg), coming off a win just nine days prior, faded to fourth and may have felt the effects of the quick turnaround.
Fractions for the race were :25.43, :49.63 and 1:14.15, with a final time of 1:32.56. Jalimba returned $3.30 as the second choice on the board.
Owned by Stud La Morocha, bred by Haras Rodeo Chico, and trained in Palermo by Omar Labanca, Jalimba now boasts 4 wins from 16 starts. Tuesday’s effort marked a return to form, and connections will be hopeful she can sustain this level and graduate once again to stakes company.
