John Gosden Dispelled Rumors Regarding a Possible Absence for Ombudsman at York

Ahead of his highly anticipated showdown with Constitution Hill in the Juddmonte International, the trainer expressed surprise at the speculation and was emphatic in stating that his recent work left the star "exactly where I wanted him"

NEWMARKET, England.— For a few hours, the blockbuster showdown that the racing world is awaiting between Ombudsman (Night of Thunder) and Constitution River (Wootton Bassett) in the upcoming Juddmonte International Stakes (G1) was cast under an unexpected cloud of uncertainty. A sudden shift in the betting markets sparked rumors regarding a potential injury setback for the defending champion, though the speculation was swiftly put to rest by John Gosden.

The trainer, who conditions the multiple G1 winner alongside his son Thady, made no attempt to hide his surprise at the rumors that began circulating while the horse was completing one of his key workouts ahead of the upcoming August 20 fixture at York.

"He worked really, really well this morning, and I was delighted with him," Gosden told the Press Association. "I have no idea where these rumors have come from. They make no sense whatsoever, and there were plenty of people there watching the gallop."

The veteran trainer detailed that Ombudsman completed a solid piece of work over the July Course at Newmarket, accompanied by a lead horse, sticking precisely to the planned schedule.

"He did a very nice piece of work with his lead horse. They went a good, solid gallop, and he came through to finish a half-length ahead, which was exactly what I wanted to see. I was extremely pleased. It leaves him right on spot for York," he added.

The speculation had gathered momentum when several bookmakers began registering a striking drift in the odds for the Godolphin homebred, who until that point had been the clear favorite to defend the title he claimed last season.

In fact, Coral took the decision to temporarily suspend betting on the Juddmonte International while attempting to verify the source of the rumors.

"We received reports that something might not have been entirely right with Ombudsman this morning, and given his significance in the market, we chose to momentarily freeze the betting," explained David Stevens, spokesman for the firm.

"Hopefully, those rumors prove unfounded, and we can reopen the market soon, because the clash with Constitution River is a race we are all eagerly anticipating."

Gosden's clarification appears to have cleared the air completely. All signs point to the eagerly awaited clash between the defending champion and the brilliant Eclipse Stakes winner remaining firmly on track, set to become one of the most anticipated events of the entire European season.
