The Venezuelan jockey received a 3-day suspension and a financial fine after exceeding the permitted limit when riding Chief Wallabee

SARATOGA SPRINGS, New York (Special for Turf Diario).– Just a few days after the running of the Belmont Stakes (G1), the New York racing authorities announced a new sanction for Junior Alvarado for violating current rules related to the use of the whip during races.

The stewards resolved to impose a 3,000-dollar fine and a three-day racing suspension on the Venezuelan jockey for having exceeded the maximum number of permitted strikes while riding Chief Wallabee (Constitution), who finished fourth in the third gem of the Triple Crown contested this past June 6 at Saratoga.

The resolution was made official on June 17, after Alvarado waived a formal hearing. The suspension must be served on June 21, 25, and 26.

According to the report from the Saratoga stewards, the rider used the whip on 8 occasions during the race, 2 more than allowed by the current regulations of the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA). The penalty was aggravated because it was the third infraction committed by Junior Alvarado within a 180-day period.

The two previous offenses occurred in early April at Keeneland. One of them took place when he guided Grand Job(Justify) to a second-place finish in the important Madison Stakes (G1), while the other occurred just a day earlier in an allowance race where he also brought Spiced Up (Quality Road) into the runner-up position.

The situation once again places one of the most prominent jockeys on the North American circuit under the magnifying glass. During 2025, he had already been sanctioned on two occasions for similar reasons, including a particularly resounding one when he exceeded the regulatory limit while guiding Sovereignty (Into Mischief) to victory in the Kentucky Derby (G1).

Since the rules promoted by HISA came into effect back in July 2022, Junior Alvarado has now accumulated 13 infractions related to the use of the whip.

The restrictions implemented by the regulatory body are part of a policy aimed at strengthening equine welfare standards and improving the public perception of the activity. However, they continue to generate debate within the industry.

Among the many critics of the regulations, there is the stance that modern whips are considerably less aggressive than those used decades ago and that much of their effect is based on the sound generated by the padded ends rather than the physical impact on the horse.

Beyond the discussion, authorities continue to rigorously apply the current provisions, and Alvarado finds himself once again among the most frequently mentioned names in disciplinary matters within American horse racing.
