These are far from easy times. The broader economy remains under pressure, and the racing industry is no exception. Still, Argentine breeders continue to invest, to dream, and to bring in new stallions with an eye firmly on the future.

Just Steel was one of the most prominent 3-year-olds of 2024 in the United States, and beginning this August he will have the opportunity to establish himself as a stallion, supported by major breeding operations—an essential factor when it comes to securing a strong book of mares and reducing risk.

A son of Triple Crown winner Justify, and thus a continuation of the highly successful sire line of Scat Daddy(Johannesburg), the bay will stand at Haras El Mallín under a partnership led primarily by Firmamento and La Nora, with additional shares still to be finalized.

“He was a horse we really liked from the moment we found him, and fortunately we were able to get the deal done to bring him to Argentina. Firmamento will support him because we have a lot of faith in him. He showed ability early, is a stakes winner, and competed in the biggest races with solid results. He was trained by D. Wayne Lukas toward the end of his career and had a demanding campaign. The pedigree is strong. There’s reason to be optimistic,” said Ezequiel Valle, part of the Firmamento team and one of the key figures behind the deal.

Antonio Bullrich, owner of El Mallín, added: “When the opportunity came up to bring him to the farm, I didn’t hesitate—I loved him. We have Sovereign (Galileo), who we know will require patience, and also Ever Daddy (Daddy Long Legs), but Just Steel is the type of horse we needed—more speed, something that can produce early runners.”

Purchased as a yearling at the Keeneland September Sale for $500,000 by BC Stables LLC and Henry Schmueckle, and bred by Summerhill Farm, Just Steel showed talent from the outset. He broke his maiden at two at Saratoga going six furlongs on dirt, racing prominently and defeating well-regarded rivals such as Be You (Curlin), Locked (Gun Runner) and Domestic Product (Practical Joke). He later capped his juvenile season with a convincing victory in the Ed Brown Stakes (L) at Churchill Downs over 1300 meters.

At three, he finished second to Catching Freedom (Constitution) in the Smarty Jones Stakes (L), ahead of future Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Mystik Dan (Goldencents), and again chased that rival home in the Southwest Stakes (G3). He also placed second in the Arkansas Derby (G1) behind Muth (Good Magic), once more finishing ahead of Mystik Dan as well as G1 winner Timberlake (Into Mischief).

He was unplaced in the Kentucky Derby and later finished fifth in the Preakness Stakes (G1), where he exited with an issue in his right front. After several months on the sidelines, he returned below his best but still managed to pick up minor placings, including a fifth in the Oaklawn Mile Stakes (G3).

Now five, Just Steel is out of the outstanding Australian mare Irish Lights (Fastnet Rock), winner of the Schweppes Thousand Guineas (G1), and also the dam of G2 winner Omei Sword (High Chaparral)—herself the dam of G3 winner Muramasa (Deep Impact)—and stakes winner Lipizzaner (Uncle Mo). His third dam, River Crossing(Affirmed), is a half-sister to the legendary Fall Aspen (Pretense), one of the most influential broodmares in modern breeding.

Already in Argentina and awaiting the start of the breeding season, Just Steel stands as further proof that, despite the challenges, the spirit of investment and ambition in Argentine breeding remains very much alive.
