The remarkable winner of the King George (G1) targets the Legends Global Yorkshire Oaks (G1), where she will face eight rivals; Minnie Hauk and Johanna Walsh loom as the primary threats

KNAVESMIRE, England (Special for Turf Diario).— Barely 24 hours after the highly anticipated clash in the Juddmonte International (G1), York will once again showcase a top-tier star on its turf. It will be the turn of Kalpana, who will headline Thursday's Legends Global Yorkshire Oaks (G1), seeking to definitively solidify her status as the finest mare in Europe.

The pupil trained by Andrew Balding already occupied a privileged spot prior to her latest outing, but what she accomplished at Ascot further elevated her standing. There, she defeated the males in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (G1), prevailing over a field loaded with quality.

It was not merely another victory. Kalpana left behind Calandagan (Gleneagles), Irish Derby (G1) winner Benvenuto Cellini (Frankel), dual Derby hero Lambourn (Australia), and Goliath (Adlerflug), who also held a King George title on his resume. That performance placed her directly among the world's premier 1 1/2-mile specialists, regardless of sex.

Now she must prove it once more against her own division over the 2,400 meters at York, in a race that, despite featuring just nine runners, includes several names fully capable of making things difficult for her.

One of them is Minnie Hauk (Galileo), who arrives seeking redemption following a below-expectation effort in that very same King George. Her immediate form warrants caution, but there are plenty of reasons to respect her: she finished second in the 2025 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (G1) and captured the Yorkshire Oaks 12 months ago. If she rebounds to her best form, she will pose a serious threat.

The classic generation will feature a standout representative in Johanna Walsh (Sea The Stars), conditioned by Joseph O'Brien. Her decisive victory in the Irish Oaks (G1) placed her at the forefront of the 2026 staying fillies, and she comes into this engagement giving the distinct impression of being in full development. In that race, she defeated Inis Mor (Galiway) by four lengths, whom she will cross paths with once again here.

Legacy Link (Dubawi) will also attempt to regain lost ground, having won the Musidora Stakes (G3) over this same track in May before finishing second to Thundering On (Night of Thunder) in the Oaks (G1). Her subsequent effort in the Ribblesdale Stakes (G2), returning on quick rest, was well below expectations, and she must now prove that outing was merely a minor misstep.

Conversely, Tattycoram (Camelot) arrives in rapid progression. The Ralph Beckett trainee comes off a broad G2victory over the ever-consistent Tiffany (Farhh), a step up in quality that puts her in position to aim for high honors.

William Haggas will be represented by Earth Shot (Time Test), who will look to rediscover the form that allowed her to narrowly edge Johanna Walsh in the Ribblesdale at Royal Ascot. She subsequently finished a distant sixth behind that same rival in the Irish Oaks.

Sparan Nua (Dawn Approach), third at The Curragh for the veteran Jim Bolger, and Sugar Island (Dubawi), another 3-year-old fielded by Aidan O'Brien, will complete a field where all eyes will be locked on Kalpana.

The card will feature another major highlight with the Sky Bet Lowther Stakes (G2 - 1,200 meters), restricted to 2-year-old fillies, which drew a crowded field of 19 contenders.

The morning-line favorite is Libertango (No Nay Never), trained by George Boughey, who after capturing the Albany Stakes (G3) at Royal Ascot confirmed her quality by finishing second in the Duchess of Cambridge Stakes(G2) at Newmarket. Billy Loughnane will be back in the irons.

The race will also serve as a rematch for much of the formline from the Queen Mary Stakes (G2), featuring Crownbreaker (Minzaal), Alta Regina (Sioux Nation), Shimmering Sun (Havana Grey), Wild Blossom(Mehmas), and Crystal Queen (Cotai Glory), among others.

Another intriguing contender is Moonrise (Churchill), second in the Windsor Castle Stakes (L) and subsequently a G3 winner at Ascot, while two Irish invaders carry high expectations.

Joseph O'Brien will saddle Star Of State (State of Rest), who comes off a runaway maiden victory by no less than nine lengths at Leopardstown. On debut, she was beaten by Livenka (Bated Breath), trained by Ger Lyons for Juddmonte, who later validated that form by making every yard in the valuable Ballyhane Stakes (L) at Naas. Colin Keane will take the reins once more.

York offers no respite. Following the battle of the Juddmonte International, Kalpana will have her own stage to prove that her formidable victory in the King George not only made her the best among the mares, but placed her squarely among the elite horses of Europe.
