Keeneland changes its rules: age limits imposed on broodmares passing through the ring

Starting in 2027, the sales company will no longer accept broodmares older than 18 years of age, except when offered as part of a complete dispersal, while 18-year-old mares must be in foal. Additionally, the minimum sale price will rise to $2,500, accompanied by new conditions for mares cataloged in January

LEXINGTON, Kentucky (Special for Turf Diario).— Market growth brings a necessity to revise its rules, and Keeneland has decided that 2027 will mark the beginning of a new chapter for its auctions. The sales company announced a series of modifications to its conditions of sale and entry policies, placing special emphasis on the age of broodmares permitted to enter the ring.
The changes will take effect starting with the 2027 January Horses of All Ages Sale and will impact three primary areas: the maximum age for broodmares, the minimum accepted bid for any horse offered, and the last covered date permitted for in-foal mares participating specifically in the January sale.
"As our industry and the marketplace continue to evolve, it is important that we regularly evaluate our policies and make thoughtful adjustments when appropriate," explained Tony Lacy, Keeneland Vice President of Sales.
"These updates are intended to support the welfare of the horses entrusted to us while ensuring we continue to provide buyers and sellers with the dynamic marketplace for which Keeneland is known."
An age limit for broodmares The most significant modification relates directly to broodmares.
Beginning in 2027, mares older than 18 years of age will no longer be accepted for any Keeneland sale, with one single exception: those offered as part of a complete dispersal.
Mares that are exactly 18 years old will still be eligible for cataloging, provided they meet an additional requirement: they must be in foal at the time of the sale.
The measure introduces a concrete age limit to entry requirements for the first time, framed by Keeneland as part of its ongoing commitment to enhancing animal welfare across its facilities.
Complete dispersals remain exempt, allowing operations or owners liquidating their entire bloodstock holdings to offer their older mares as well.
Minimum price increased Another modification will apply across all auctions organized by Keeneland.
Starting in 2027, the upset price—the minimum acceptable bid inside the ring—will rise to $2,500.
No horse may be sold below that figure.
The change will span all company sales, raising the commercial floor for every horse presented in its ring.
The third adjustment is reserved specifically for the January sale and affects in-foal mares.
To be eligible for entry in the 2027 edition, mares must have been covered on or after March 1, 2026. Those with last covered dates prior to March 1 will not be eligible to participate.
The new requirements will be formally incorporated into Keeneland's 2027 Conditions of Sale and entry documentation.
The company also confirmed that the deadline to enter horses for the upcoming January Horses of All Ages Sale is November 1.
Keeneland continues to navigate an extraordinary commercial period, coming off record figures across its flagship sales. Now, the company is shifting focus toward the framework governing that marketplace. Starting in January 2027, new rules will take effect, headed by one particularly significant mandate: barring complete dispersals, no broodmare over the age of 18 will ever walk through its ring again.
