Keeneland opens its massive global yearling market once again

The September Yearling Sale begins this Monday with 4,642 cataloged yearlings spanning twelve sessions through September 26, following a historic 2025 edition that grossed over $531.7 million and set record highs across several metrics

LEXINGTON, Kentucky (Special for Turf Diario).— For nearly two weeks, a significant portion of the global racing future will pass through the ring at Keeneland. This Monday marks the start of the 83rd edition of the September Yearling Sale, the gigantic auction that every season gathers buyers in Lexington from all corners of the globe, following a 2025 edition that reached unprecedented figures.

Expectations are running sky-high. The catalog features 4,642 yearlings to be offered across twelve sessions through Saturday, September 26, with the most select prospects concentrated primarily during the first four days.

Surpassing the benchmark set twelve months ago will be no easy feat. The 2025 September Sale became the highest-grossing Thoroughbred auction in history, generating over $531.7 million from the sale of 3,078 yearlings.

Record highs were also established with 56 yearlings sold for $1 million or more, alongside an average price of $172,755 and a median of $80,000—metrics that underscored the sustained strength of the American market in its upper tiers.

“Last September, the industry reached a milestone that just a few years ago would have seemed unimaginable,” noted Shannon Arvin, President and CEO of Keeneland, highlighting the strong presence of buyers from across the United States and abroad.

For Arvin, those figures reaffirmed that a robust global demand remains eager to travel great distances whenever supreme quality is offered.

And quality is precisely what Keeneland will aim to deliver once again. For the sixth consecutive year, Books 1 and 2 will span the first four days, showcasing over 1,100 select yearlings handpicked for pedigree, physical conformation, and genetic potential. Book 1 will take place Monday and Tuesday starting at 1:00 p.m. local time, while Wednesday and Thursday will showcase Book 2 starting at 11:00 a.m.

Friday, September 18 will serve as a dark day, with action resuming Saturday, September 19, for Books 3, 4, and 5, concluding the auction on Saturday, September 26.

As always, racetrack success serves as the finest advertisement for the catalog.

Graduates of the September Sale had compiled 331 stakes victories during 2026 through September 10, including 35 at the G1 level. Among the most recent highlights are three juveniles who swiftly asserted themselves at the top of their division: Hughes (Into Mischief), winner of the Del Mar Futurity (G1); Miss Monica (Early Voting), victorious in the Del Mar Debutante (G1); and Summer Starlet (City of Light), heroine of the Spinaway Stakes (G1).

That current track success reflects directly upon several yearlings set to enter the ring.

Among them are a half-sister to Burnham Square (Liam's Map), winner of the Arlington Million (G1); a half-sister to Counting Stars (Honor A.P.), winner of the Coaching Club American Oaks (G1); a half-sister to Englishman(Maxfield), hero of the H. Allen Jerkens Memorial (G1); and a half-brother to Hymn (McKinzie), recent winner of the Forego Stakes (G1).

Also offered will be Hip 292, a half-brother to Hughes, while Hip 1807 is a half-sister to The Good Life (Life Is Good), winner of the Hopeful Stakes (G1). Joining them are close relatives of Kentucky Belle (Justify), Somerset West (Kantharos), Bless the Broken (Laoban), In Our Time (Not This Time), and Tomasello (Authentic), among other recent stakes winners.

The 2026 renewal will also mark the sales ring debut of the new Paddock Building, a three-story facility unveiled during the spring meeting as part of the largest construction project in Keeneland's history.

Yet, naturally, all eyes will focus squarely on the auction ring.

There, the world's prominent breeders, agents, trainers, and owners will converge once more in pursuit of tomorrow's champions. Some will fetch millions; others will pass far more under the radar. Time and the racetrack will ultimately determine who bought best.

After shattering every record in 2025, Keeneland sets its grand September marketplace back in motion. Starting this Monday, 4,642 dreams go searching for new owners in Lexington.
