The daughter of Tiz the Law produced a commanding performance to win the Polla de Potrancas (G1), emulating the triumph achieved by her dam Kirikina in 2021; she scored by 2 3/4 lengths over Immense Deep to take charge at the head of her generation
SANTIAGO DE CHILE, Chile (Special for Turf Diario).— Kerouac carries the blood of royalty and runs like it. The promising daughter of Tiz the Law established herself as the new leader among Chilean 3-year-old fillies with an emphatic victory in the Clásico Polla de Potrancas (G1-1,700 m, turf), one of the traditional landmark events on the Club Hípico de Santiago racing calendar.
Winner in early August of the Clásico Carlos Valdés I. (G3-1,600 m), Kerouac confirmed all the quality she had displayed that afternoon and left her 8 rivals without answers. With Joaquín Herrera back in the irons, she surged clear in the closing stages and hit the wire with a 2 3/4-length margin over Immense Deep (Hiraboku Deep), who once again finished as the runner-up, just as she had in their previous encounter.
The victory also carried deep symbolic meaning. Kerouac emulated the triumph achieved by her dam, Kirikina(Verrazano), in the very same race during the 2021 season, continuing a family legacy of immense weight on the Chilean turf. From mother to daughter, the crown remained in the family.
Trained by Juan Silva G., Kerouac needed just 4 career starts to establish herself as the premier standout of her 3-year-old crop. She debuted victoriously on January 12 over 1,100 meters at the same venue, returning more than 5 months later to finish third in the Clásico Arturo Lyon Peña (G1-1,600 m) while still a juvenile.
That afternoon, she finished behind Sulis (Tacitus) and La del Estribo (Tiz the Law), but she has now taken definitive revenge. La del Estribo finished third, while Sulis could manage no better than fifth, never threatening the dominance of the winner.
Turning 3 seemed to unleash Kerouac's full potential, as she remains unbeaten in 2 starts as a sophomore. First, she dominated the Carlos Valdés I., and now she stepped up to clear the highest hurdle in the Polla de Potrancas, taking her overall record to 3 wins and 1 third from 4 starts, all under the guidance of Herrera.
The new champion belongs to the first Chilean crop of Tiz the Law, the son of Constitution who was one of the premier American stars of 2020, a season in which he captured the Belmont Stakes (G1) and the Travers Stakes (G1). Kerouac became his fifth G1 winner overall and the third to achieve that level on Chilean tracks, further proving the remarkable impact of the young stallion.
However, a large share of her class is also anchored in an extraordinary female line. Kerouac is the first stakes winner produced by Kirikina, a daughter of Verrazano and Kitcat (Scat Daddy), another top-echelon mare who captured the Clásico Club Hípico de Santiago (G1) over 2,000 meters.
The family tree is stacked with elite performers. Kitcat is a full sister to Knockout and a half-sister to Kossimo(Gracioso) and Kurilov (Lookin At Lucky), all G1 winners. Further back, the maternal line traces directly to Almahmoud (Mahmoud) and Cosmah (Cosmic Bomb).
With such pedigree credentials and an upward trajectory that shows no signs of slowing down, Kerouac has a bright future ahead. Her triumph in the Polla de Potrancas not only placed her at the pinnacle of her generation, but also left the distinct impression that Chile has uncovered its newest star.
