Kobuk (Hi Happy), the brother to G2 winners Kopke (Hi Happy) and Kodiak Boy (Treasure Beach), topped the Haras La Providencia Annual Yearling Sale held Tuesday at the Tattersall del Hipódromo de San Isidro, with Haras La Pasión participating as guest consignor and under the organization of Blacktype Bloodstock.
Additionally, the fillies by King Guillermo offered in paired lots were also among the major stars of the afternoon, with the three reserve pairings featured in the catalog finishing immediately behind Kobuk and occupying much of the upper portion of the price list. They were offered under the now well-known format in which the buyer selects one of the two fillies while the remaining filly stays with the farm.
By Hi Happy and foaled in October, Kobuk was ultimately secured by Stud Las Monjitas following an intense bidding duel. His family traces directly to champion Kononkop (Pure Prize), among others, while the stable of Camilo Bautista had also campaigned both Kopke and Kodiak Boy.
As for the paired offerings, the first duo to enter the ring sparked another prolonged bidding battle before Pedro Nickel—who trained for the Brazilian stable for several years in Argentina—landed the final bid at US$52,000.
The options, cataloged as Hip No. 6, were Indumati, a sister to G1 winners Off the Road (Quick Road) and On the Road (Quick Road), and Siempre Azul, granddaughter of G2 winner Sirga (Southern Halo) and sister to the durable Sinfonía Latina (Señor Candy).
The final decision fell, logically enough, on Indumati.
The pairing cataloged as Hip Nos. 16A and 16B, Nota Dez (King Guillermo) and Op Artbasel (King Guillermo), also sold for US$52,000, this time with Pablo Martucci, acting as agent, signing the ticket.
When the time came to choose, Martucci selected Nota Dez, granddaughter of Nortak (Fitzcarraldo) through Notre Etoile (Cityscape), from the exceptional family of Comalal.
Meanwhile, the fillies cataloged as Hip Nos. 11A and 11B, Grazia (King Guillermo) and Redonda Beach (King Guillermo), finished just behind to complete the podium of top prices.
Nicolás Gaitán Dassié prevailed at US$51,000, selecting Grazia, a great-granddaughter of the outstanding Griffe de Paris (Telescópico) and from the family of G1 winners Greta G (Exchange Rate), Grezzo (Hi Happy), Global Hunter (Jade Hunter), and Ollagua (Pure Prize), among others.
Another of the sale’s top prices came through Hi Skydive (Hi Happy–Skinbiquini, by Cityscape), purchased for US$51,000 by Stud Don Valentino.
In total, the 40 yearlings that passed through the ring—only one absentee due to a last-minute physical setback—generated gross receipts of US$835,500, with an average of US$20,887.50 and a median of US$17,367.
