The La Valkiria homebred was unstoppable on the Palermo straight, in a race where La Gran Furtiva was a non-starter

Alfredo Farioli and his family continue to enjoy the enormous generosity of the stallion Mask, the Tapit son he found in the United States and imported for his Haras La Valkiria almost without a second thought, enamored by his physique and presence.
In a game where it rarely happens, Fredy was right; over time, the bay in whom hope and affection merged for a couple of years has not stopped providing satisfaction, having already become one of the most solid sires in the country—a true top-of-the-line producer.
Now the Farioli family enjoyed another beautiful winner's circle photo at Hipódromo Argentino de Palermo with La Mykonos, one of their favorite mares, who was overwhelming this Monday in taking the Handicap Spiny. The race, a tribute to the unforgettable La Quebrada sprinter—one of those unrepeatable horses—was held, as expected, over 1000 meters on normal dirt.
It is clear that the absence of La Gran Furtiva (South Kissing) removed a very tough rival from the gray's path, but judging by the way she settled the matter, one would have to wonder what would have happened if the original recipient of the top weight (63) had ultimately been saddled.
With Kevin Banegas in the irons and carrying a rather light weight (57 1/2)—it is often difficult to understand the parameters handicappers use—La Mykonos was launched from the starting gates, sought the shelter of the outside rail, and once she reached that position, demolished her only four rivals.
Early on, she already held wide margins, which she extended from the 300-meter mark to the wire when her rider asked for a finish, though without firm urging. In the end, it was 6 lengths that she put between herself and La Asturiana Blue(Le Blues, 56 1/2), who left Gran Celestial (Il Mercato, 58 1/2) in third by a neck, all after a time of 56s24/100.
Saddled by Gonzalo Peralta, La Mykonos—who was dropping in class after a couple of stakes performances—reached her fifth victory and second above the common level, as she had won the Handicap Sandal on the turf straight in October. The Farioli family is happy, both for the gray and for Mask. Send for a double blanket and a double ration for the stallion!
