The 3-year-old maidens will compete for 2,662,000 to the winner, a figure that, after deductions, will barely be enough to pay for a month's keep

LA PLATA.– Welcome to the era of the Alternative Category (CA) at the racecourse of this city. This Friday, entries were received for the final meeting of June and the first one of July, where the self-inflicted wound by the authorities is already clearly visible.

Many owners were already contemplating what to do with their horses upon the mere announcement of the condition book containing 50 races for the intermediate level; however, after learning the prize money they will compete for, the reaction remains to be seen.

For instance, 3-year-old maidens will receive 2,662,000 pesos if they cross the wire first, a figure that, after a 32 percent deduction, will barely serve to cover a month's keep. Yet, in the world of turf, everything can always get worse: one race (for 5-year-old mares with one win) was programmed with a first-place prize of 1,688,500 pesos, an insulting return given the investment required.

"If we were in bad shape before, now I don’t even know how to qualify the situation. We are in contact among the most prominent owners in La Plata and we will see what steps to take next. This was unsustainable before; now, quite frankly, it’s time to close shop or move all the horses away," an owner who preferred to remain anonymous stated.

As things stand, La Plata prepares to sink even deeper into the well with two new racing programs, scheduled for Tuesday, June 30, and Thursday, July 2.

The most significant events will take place on the latter date, featuring the continuation of the stakes road for 2-year-old fillies and the Clásico Miguel Luis Morales (G2-1,600 m, dirt), a stepping stone toward the Polla (G3). The prize for the winner stands at 5,280,000 pesos.

With Siesta (Cityscape) topping the list, the field of 8 nominees is completed by: Encuesta (Il Campione), Fuga a Italia (Cityscape), Inter Bombaza (Hit It a Bomb), Invisible Cape (Cityscape), Salema (Il Mercato), Tiza(Mootasadir), and Toribia Morris (Gouverneur Morris).

That same day, the Clásico Jockey Club de San Pablo (2,000 m, dirt) will also take place, tailored for mares 4 years old and upward under weight-for-age conditions, attracting 13 entries, including Soy La Líder (Manipulator) and Dona Zoe (Storm Embrujado).

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, June 30, the Especial Doctrinaria Slew (1,700 m, dirt) and the Handicap Haras La Providencia (1,200 m, dirt) will take center stage.
