One of the marquee attractions on May 1 at Hipódromo Argentino de Palermo will be the G1 Gran Premio Ciudad de Buenos Aires (1000m, dirt), where all eyes will be on the highly anticipated clash between Le Cornette (Emmanuel) and Labrado (Le Blues).

It’s a meeting of the newly crowned Champion Sprinter and the former king of the division, who held that title for three consecutive seasons. Both arrive in peak form, adding even more intrigue to an already electric showdown.

Le Cornette comes in off three dominant, front-running victories down Palermo’s Avenida del Libertador straight, while Labrado made a strong statement in mid-February when capturing the G3 Clásico General Viamonte on the turf at San Isidro.

Now nearing seven years of age, this will be Le Cornette’s first appearance in the Ciudad de Buenos Aires. For Labrado, it marks his fourth consecutive start in the prestigious sprint—having finished second in 2023, winning in 2024, and placing third last year.

And they won’t have it easy.

El Epecuén (Il Campione) looms as a major threat. He defeated Le Cornette in the G1 Gran Premio Maipú and also finished ahead of him when third in the G1 Félix de Alzaga Unzué, won by El Fortín (Il Campione), as well as in the Clásico Jerry Honor.

Meanwhile, El Mejor Recuerdo (Il Campione), last year’s winner of the Ciudad de Buenos Aires, brings both class and experience as the defending champion.

A deep and competitive supporting cast includes Amante Trovador (Angiolo), Azúcar Negro (Angiolo), Claro Key(Claro Oscuro), Contra Pronóstico (Daddy Long Legs), Lo Straniero (Manipulator), Naranccello (Le Blues), Primer Amor (Manipulator), Ruler Man (Lenovo), Stormy West (In the Dark), and Vendaval Joy (Roman Joy), completing a field of 14 contenders.

The race offers a winner’s purse of ARS 30,000,000, with total entry fees set at ARS 1,278,000. As with all races on the Labor Day card, final declarations are due by Monday at noon.

With established champions, rising stars, and proven speedsters converging, the Ciudad de Buenos Aires promises to deliver one of the most thrilling spectacles of the season.
