Life Changing faces her first major test in the Spinaway Stakes

The daughter of Life Is Good debuted with a 7-length victory and now targets Saratoga’s G1 for Todd Pletcher; Angel of Kirk, Summer Starlet, and Girvy Girl also arrive undefeated, while Stress Relief and Harper’s Corner are already stakes winners

SARATOGA SPRINGS, New York (Special for Turf Diario).— Life Changing delivered precisely on her name’s promise when debuting on August 1 at Saratoga. Winning by seven lengths, she left a magnificent impression that immediately prompted her connections to dream big. This Saturday, the time comes to see just how high her ceiling extends when she headlines the Spinaway Stakes (G1-1,400 m, $300,000), the traditional summer showcase for 2-year-old fillies.

Beyond the immense prestige attached to one of the premier juvenile G1 events of the American summer, an automatic spot in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) on October 30 at Keeneland will be up for grabs via the "Win and You're In" program.

Trained by Todd Pletcher for Repole Stable, Life Changing went off as the 2-1 favorite in her unveiling and delivered in spades, scoring by seven lengths under Luis Saez. She earned an 84 Beyer Speed Figure and, above all, gave the distinct impression that she had plenty more to offer.

“We think she's really special,” said Mike Repole. “She came out of the gate and did everything professionally. Down the lane, she did everything right and galloped out super strong. Luis said she had so much left in the tank.”

The high expectations surrounding Life Changing long predate her debut. A daughter of Life Is Good out of Smart Shopping (Smart Strike), she is a half-sister to 2024 Preakness Stakes (G1) winner Seize the Grey (Arrogate), commandingly fetching $1,025,000 as a yearling at Fasig-Tipton Saratoga.

“We loved her, we loved her sire, and we loved her family. We just didn't think she'd hit a million dollars,” Repoleadmitted.

This time, Flavien Prat takes the reins aboard Life Changing, who breaks from post 8. Pletcher will aim to extend his record number of Spinaway victories to eight, having previously won the event with stars such as Ashado (Saint Ballado), R Heat Lightning (Trippi), Rachel's Valentina (Bernardini), and last year's edition with Tommy Jo (Into Mischief).

However, the favorite faces a formidable collection of rivals, including three other fillies undefeated in their lone starts.

Among them is Angel of Kirk, trained by Brad Cox. The daughter of Yaupon debuted on July 11 at Saratoga, rolling to a 4 3/4-length victory over 1,100 meters, and has continued to progress since, according to her conditioner. Manny Franco replaces Prat, who opted to ride Life Changing.

Also unbeaten is Summer Starlet (City of Light), a Steve Asmussen pupil who made a big impression on August 8, closing from seventh to kick clear by 6 1/2 lengths over 1,300 meters.

Even more jaw-dropping was the debut of Girvy Girl (Girvin). Trained by Saffie Joseph Jr., she blew away her competition by 15 lengths at Gulfstream Park before transferring to Saratoga, where she posted four workouts in preparation for this assignment.

Opposing the impressive maiden winners are two fillies who have already taken the next step during the meet.

Stress Relief enters undefeated in two starts after taking a Churchill Downs maiden by five lengths and following up with a 3 1/2-length victory in the Adirondack Stakes (G3). The daughter of Not This Time represents Kinnon LaRose, who earned his first career stakes victory as a trainer with her performance.

Harper's Corner (Speaker's Corner) is likewise perfect on her record. She scored by 7 3/4 lengths on debut at Laurel Park before validating her quality with a 5 1/4-length victory in the Schuylerville Stakes (L) at Saratoga.

The field is completed by Cha Cha Baby (Highly Motivated), coming off a nine-length maiden score at Delaware Park and making her first start for Butch Reid Jr., and Bandmaster (Enticed), who finished fourth in the Adirondack.

The stage is set for a contest loaded with talent: runaway winners, four fillies entering off victories in their lone appearances, and two already proven in stakes company. Chief among them, all eyes will be squarely on Life Changing. A seven-figure yearling purchase, a half-sister to a Preakness winner, and a debut performance that looked out of the ordinary.

Now comes the Spinaway—the race where she must prove whether that stunning initial flash was merely the beginning.
