Los Llanos Aims for the Polla de Potrillos at La Plata, Facing a Tough Field

On a surface bound to be severely compromised following relentless rainfall, the son of Le Blues will look to cement his status as the division leader at the venue; Desert Voice, Caravadossi, Autorretrato, Socio Gerente, and Pillo Puntanoloom as his primary obstacles

LA PLATA.— Just days following the brilliant victory by Personal Filly (Dabster) in the Clásico Polla de Potrancas(G2), the local Triple Crown series at Hipódromo de La Plata reaches its second major launching pad this afternoon with the running of the Clásico Polla de Potrillos (G3-1,600 m).

Over a track surface bound to prove extremely heavy following heavy overnight rains and more precipitation forecast through much of the card, a field of 8 sophomore colts will embark on a path as prestigious as it is demanding. It is a route that calls for genuine quality, stamina, and consistency to complete a series that has eluded a winner for over three decades.

Indeed, no horse has swept La Plata's Triple Crown since 1995, when Cóndor Cal (Hesical) conquered every leg to stand as the venue's most recent triple crown hero. The recurring question surfaces once more: will there be a sophomore capable of repeating such a historical feat?

The entry list offers plenty of reasons for optimism. Los Llanos (Le Blues) carries the weight of defending his position as division leader; trainer Juan Saldivia will pursue a double with the uncoupled tandem of Desert Voice (Dabster) and Caravadossi (Señor Candy); Autorretrato (Angiolo) looks to confirm his forward progress; Socio Gerente(Seize) puts his perfect record on the line; and Pillo Puntano (Village King) aims to build upon the promising growth shown in his latest outing.

Los Llanos knows the local oval as well as anyone. He has raced at the venue 5 times, winning on 4 occasions—a streak highlighted by group triumphs in the Clásico Asociación de Propietarios de Caballos de Carrera de Buenos Aires (G3), Clásico Luis María Doyhenard (G3), and Clásico Isidoro Aramburu (G3).

Paradoxically, his lone setback in La Plata was arguably the performance that did the most to elevate his profile. In the Clásico Pedro Goenaga (G2), he finished second to the talented Fletcher (Gershwin), who subsequently validated that form in emphatic fashion by dominating the Clásico Miguel Cané (G2) at Palermo to emerge as a leading contender for the upcoming Gran Premio Polla de Potrillos (G1).

Notably, Juan Saldivia conditions the only horse that has managed to defeat Los Llanos at La Plata, giving him the proven playbook. That responsibility now falls on Desert Voice and Caravadossi.

The Al Adiyaat representative rebuilt his confidence with a convincing allowance victory at Palermo, scoring by four lengths over Corazón Federal (Strategos) on a wet track. That winning effort allowed him to put behind two sub-par performances that followed a highly promising start to his career, which included a debut win and a narrow second behind The Great Terms in the Clásico Crespo (G3).

Caravadossi, on the other hand, arrives via a different path. After two unplaced efforts at San Isidro despite heavy support at the windows, he found his stride upon transitioning to his home training track, breaking his maiden in convincing style. Now he faces a combination of new tests: changing venues once more, stretching out from 1,400 meters to the mile, and tackling a heavy track surface—a stern examination all around.

Autorretrato finished third in the aforementioned Goenaga before gaining quick redemption with a comfortable maiden victory. His return to stakes company suggests another competitive showing, though it remains to be seen if he possesses the extra gear needed to contend for top honors.

Socio Gerente made a tremendous impression in his winning debut over 1,200 meters, though he now faces a steep rise in class alongside a significant jump in distance. Meanwhile, Pillo Puntano failed to fire on debut before improving dramatically to score a narrow victory that earned him a spot in this lineup.

The field is completed by Full Talent (Full Mast), who remains a maiden, and El Pirata (Il Campione), two longshots looking to pull off an upset in a Polla that promises high drama from the moment the gates spring open.
