In a competitive and intriguing field, Cafere's representative shoulders both favoritism and the weight of expectations

After 276 days on the sidelines, El Patio is set to make his much-anticipated return to the track this Friday in the Handicap Simonside, the featured event of the light card at San Isidro, serving as a prelude to Sunday’s marquee meeting for the Gran Premio 25 de Mayo (G1).

The son of Il Campione will carry a hefty impost of 63 kilos in the 1400-meter dirt contest, a logical assignment given a résumé clearly superior to that of the seven rivals he’ll face—a career shaped as much by his undeniable talent as by physical issues that have repeatedly held him back.

What’s certain is that El Patio has class to spare. The Miguel Cafere trainee was last seen winning back-to-back stakes in the Clásico Gendarmería Nacional Argentina and the Clásico General José de San Martín (G3). He also captured the Clásico Urbano de Iriondo (L) and finished runner-up to Huapango Torero (Suggestive Boy) in the Gran Premio Joaquín S. de Anchorena (G1) in 2023.

Should the weight and the long layoff prove too much, Con Exceso (Homage, 56) looms as a legitimate threat. He, too, is returning from a lengthy break—174 days, in his case—but signed off with a solid fourth in the Clásico Urbano de Iriondo (L), behind Don Latido (John F Kennedy) and just off El Exito (Il Campione), currently one of the top milers on dirt.

Bequepingo (Cityscape, 55) comes off a strong win in allowance company and now represents Stud Los Molestos from Tucumán. Though his form has been uneven, he boasts several graded placings and clearly has ability—on his day.

Breaking from the rail, Tsunami Key (Key Deputy, 59) brings consistency and experience to the table, with 8 wins under his belt. Most recently, he finished third in the Handicap Practicante, 2 lengths behind Twitch Hurricane (Hurricane Cat) at Palermo.

For the value seekers, Chanclette (Super Saver, 55) remains a wildcard. He always seems poised for a breakthrough, only for something to go amiss. Could this finally be his day?
