Mombasa found on the turf the path toward stakes company

Mombasa arrived later to stakes competition, but she is quickly making up for lost time. In only her third career start, the representative of Stud Aladino made the leap from allowance ranks to black-type territory with an inspiring victory, capitalizing on an affinity for the Palermo turf that is fast becoming a potent weapon.
The Clásico Asociación Cooperativa de Criadores de Sangre Pura de Carrera Ltda. (L), contested over 1400 meters as the first of two stakes events on Monday at Hipódromo Palermo, presented a demanding test. Waiting there were Embozada Rim (Remote) and Salema (Il Mercato), both boasting richer credentials and proven experience against quality opposition. Yet it was the filly bred by Haras Don Yayo who provided the strongest response when it came time to decide the race.
Fourth on debut over the San Isidro dirt, Mombasa had broken her maiden upon switching to the Palermo turf over 1200 meters. Now she faced two simultaneous challenges: stretching out in distance and stepping up in class. She met both with authority, proving just how well she takes to a surface where adaptability is so often the decisive factor.
With William Pereyra in the saddle, the Juan Saldivia trainee settled in third as Embozada Rim set the pace, shadowed by Sueña Hit (Hit It a Bomb). From that position, she was able to track the leader closely while conserving energy for the stretch, where she ultimately constructed her victory taking the shortest route home.
The opening appeared along the rail. Mombasa squeezed through on the inside and, upon reaching the final 200 meters, launched the surge that allowed her to brush aside Embozada Rim. Her momentum carried through all the way to the wire, which she reached with a 1 1/2-length advantage over Salema. The latter, in turn, edged the early pacemaker by a head for second, stopping the clock in 1m22s73/100.
It marked another celebration for Saldivia and Pereyra, key players in a season that continues to pile up major results. This time, it came courtesy of a lightly raced filly capable of stepping up immediately to a higher test and adding a fresh name to the grass division.
A member of the first crop by Have At It (Kitten's Joy), Mombasa also provided special satisfaction for her dam, Liz for Sale (by Not For Sale). Winner of the Clásico Francisco J. Beazley (G2), Clásico Arturo R. y Arturo Bullrich(G2), and Clásico Apertura (G3), the mare had failed to produce a winner among her previous 7 starters. With Mombasa, that wait came to an end—and black-type success followed right behind.
Her pedigree depth extends to her granddam, Lu Toss (Egg Toss), who also produced G3-placed Lucky Halo (Halo Sunshine) and Lunación (Petit Poucet). The latter dam produced G2 winner Moon Sale (Not for Sale), dam of 2025 Gran Premio Polla de Potrancas (G1) heroine Moon Frank (Gidu). It is also the maternal family of Tapatío (Candy Stripes), Horse of the Year and winner of the Gran Premio Nacional (G1).
Mombasa still has a long way to go, but she has already found a surface where she feels at home and a class level where she commands respect. She arrived later than others to the stakes arena; this Monday, she began carving out a place of her own.
