While Monday’s card at the Hipódromo Argentino de Palermo won’t be much from a conditions standpoint, the stakes doubleheader featuring the Clásico Japón (L-1400m, turf) and the Domingo Torterolo (1200m, dirt) adds a touch of quality.

The first of those races, open to 4-year-olds and up under weight-for-age conditions, has drawn six entries and will see Mr Neil (Valid Stripes) looking to extend his excellent form while switching surfaces, having been shining on dirt of late.

Owned by Stud El Galopón, Mr Neil has never won on turf, though back in late 2022 he was runner-up to champion Zillion Stars (Cityscape) in the Clásico Invasor (G3) at San Isidro. His career was interrupted by a long layoff, but since returning he has only improved, capturing the Handicap Intérprete and then the Clásico Día de la Bandera last out.

He will face seasoned rivals such as El Gazpacho (Bodemeister) and Don Rocky (Equal Stripes), both with proven class in these types of races, while Quebracho Joy (Fortify) continues to hint at stakes-level ability and now must confirm it.

The Goat (Fortify) is inconsistent but talented, and Approval Cat (Endorsement) comes off a runner-up finish by just half a length behind Giant Rimout (Remote) in the Clásico Juan C. Etchechoury. It’s an open field where any can win.

In the Torterolo, restricted to 3-year-olds, El Resero Con Capa (Angiolo) is an intriguing prospect making his return after an impressive debut win down the straight in mid-February.

Niño Samurai (Hat Ninja) is a dangerous rival, having broken his maiden at La Plata over 1000 meters before a fine effort in the Clásico Asociación de Propietarios de Caballos de Carrera (G3), where he finished a close third to Bolero Frank (Gidu).

Also carrying strong form is Chaplin (Nicholas), who was only 3/4 of a length behind Neón Boy (Cosmic Trigger) in the Clásico Estrellas Dirt and now looks for revenge.
