Nam Phrik, in the Las Monjitas colors, pulls off a weight-carrying feat at Meydan

The runner representing the South American team of Antonio Cintra and Julio Olascoaga captured victory on the opening day of the Dubai Racing Carnival, shouldering a formidable assignment of 64.5 kilograms (142 lbs). Partnered by Danny Tudhope, he gamely held on through a punishing stretch duel to secure his breakthrough victory in the United Arab Emirates

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (Special for Turf Diario).— The South American flag enjoyed a moment of triumph on the opening card of the Dubai Racing Carnival, brought home by a stable with a deep understanding of competing on the international stage. Nam Phrik, carrying the silks of Stud Las Monjitas, captured the Arabian Adventures Handicap, the final event of Meydan's opening fixture, overcoming a daunting burden of 64.5 kilograms (142 lbs).
This was no standard assignment, carrying ten full kilos over the bottom weights—a massive concession in handicap company specifically structured to level the playing field.
Nevertheless, the runner trained by the team of Antonio Cintra and Julio Olascoaga found a way to prevail, handing his connections a premier victory to kick off the Emirati season.
Partnered by Danny Tudhope, Nam Phrik had to dig deep to secure the spoils. Turning into the home straight, he asserted control to put away the persistence of Alsayel (City of Light), who had led the charge into the lane. Just as the issue seemed settled, Quality Humor (Distorted Humor) unleashed a powerful late surge.
Far from folding, the Las Monjitas representative dug in and held his ground all the way to the wire, showcasing a combination of class, stamina, and grit that proved decisive in securing his breakthrough victory in the United Arab Emirates.
For Cintra and Olascoaga, who have built a steady, high-profile presence on the international circuit, the win served as reward for the extensive preparation and acclimation required to compete at Meydan.
The victory also held added significance for Tudhope, who completed a riding double on the card after taking the featured event aboard Brotherly Love (Zoustar).
Trained by British handler Jamie Osborne, Brotherly Love captured the featured Sheikh Ahmed Bin Rashed Al Maktoum Cup over the mile, drawing off to win by 5 1/4 lengths over Sirocco Winds (Dubawi).
Brotherly Love, who finished fourth in the UAE Derby (G2) last season, was returning to action following a summer gelding procedure. His dominant display confirmed he could develop into a key player as the Carnival progresses.
The card also delivered an emotional story through Colour Up (Mehmas), an 8-year-old veteran who returned to the winner's enclosure at Meydan after a three-season drought, edging Ma Yetal (Flameaway) by a half-length in the Emirates Airline Conditions Stakes.
Trained by Doug Watson and ridden by Pat Dobbs, the gelding sparked lively celebrations among his connections.
The fixture further featured wins by Desert Horizon (Caravaggio), which gave French jockey Jules Mobian his maiden victory at Meydan; Union Security (Maximum Security), who romped by five lengths in sophomore company; and a double for trainer Bhupat Seemar and jockey Tadhg O'Shea via Ops (Maximus Mischief) and Na Eem (Flatter).
Yet from a South American perspective, no performance carried the significance of Nam Phrik's victory.
Winning at Meydan is never an easy task. Doing so in handicap company while shouldering 64.5 kilograms and fending off a late charge in the closing stages adds immense merit to the Las Monjitas success.
The Dubai Racing Carnival resumes on Friday, November 20, highlighted by the Dubai Creek Mile (L). For the South American squad, however, the first major satisfaction of the winter meets is already in the book.
