Trainer and Jockey Teamed Up for Monsieur Delon’s Narrow Win in the Clásico 25 de Mayo de 1810

LA PLATA.- The victory Monsieur Delon delivered was the highlight of the day for footballer Ignacio Fernández, who later that evening played for River Plate in a home draw against Universitario of Peru at the Monumental de Núñez, a result that secured the team’s place at the top of their group and a berth in the Copa Libertadores round of 16.
It’s become a habit for the midfielder to celebrate the gray colt’s triumphs, and with Tuesday’s success in the Clásico 25 de Mayo de 1810 (G2), the son of Il Campione now boasts three black-type wins in his career—two of them at La Plata.
Jockey William Pereyra and trainer Jorge Mayansky Neer teamed up once again to guide Monsieur Delon to victory, catching Paraná Miní (Winning Prize) in the final strides over a testing racetrack.
After the race and trophy presentation, both professionals shared their impressions on Daniel Sinegub’s closed-circuit TV broadcast.
Pereyra, clearly pleased, said: “The horse helped me all the way. He was always in the race, and in the stretch, Paraná Miní was tough to get by, but luck was on our side and we managed to catch and outfinish him. The track is extremely heavy, but he handled it beautifully. He really showed us he’s up for these kinds of races.”
For his part, Mayansky Neer—who always keeps the southern circuit’s stakes schedule in mind—added: “It’s a great joy. He’s a very good horse who’s already given us three stakes wins. I’m especially happy because Ignacio (Fernández), the owner, is a good friend and a true racing enthusiast.”
On the performance itself, the longtime Palermo-based trainer said: “He won well, just like William described. He proved again he belongs at this level. He has a great attitude. He’s won everywhere—in all three racetracks—but in La Plata, he’s found a high level, so we’ll probably keep him there, although I need to talk with the owner, who watched the race on TV and was thrilled.”
A die-hard River Plate supporter, Mayansky was then hoping for a bit of payback from Nacho Fernández. While River didn’t win, the draw was enough to clinch qualification—perhaps just the opening he needed to share a good-natured jab with any Boca Juniors fans nearby.
