Newspaperofrecord, the champion who also made history as a broodmare

The 2018 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf winner produced Benvenuto Cellini, hero of this year's Turf. She becomes only the fifth broodmare to achieve such a double, joining an elite group headed by Personal Ensign

LEXINGTON, Kentucky.— Benvenuto Cellini’s (Frankel) victory in the Breeders' Cup Turf (G1) left behind a narrative that reaches far beyond his on-track glory. His dam, Newspaperofrecord (Lope de Vega), had captured the Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1) in 2018, and has now entered a truly elite circle: Breeders' Cup winners who have also produced a Breeders' Cup winner.
Over more than four decades, just five mares have attained such a distinction. Newspaperofrecord’s inclusion carries even greater weight considering Benvenuto Cellini (Frankel) is only her second foal.
The remarkable Irish-bred mare was one of the standout figures of her generation under the care of Chad Brown, defending the colors of Klaravich Stables. Her racing career featured four graded stakes victories, highlighted by that unforgettable triumph at Keeneland.
She was subsequently acquired in a private transaction by Coolmore alongside Peter Brant of White Birch Farm to launch her broodmare career in Europe.
Her first foal was Giselle, a 2022 daughter of Frankel who earned placements in G3 company. A year later arrived Benvenuto Cellini, also by Juddmonte’s extraordinary stallion, who ultimately elevated this genetic pairing to a whole new dimension.
The colt had already captured the Irish Derby (G1) prior to his score in the Breeders' Cup Turf (G1), confirming top-tier class that places him among the finest stayers of his crop.
Yet Newspaperofrecord’s milestone draws on precedents that rank among the golden chapters of global breeding.
The most extraordinary belongs to the family of Personal Ensign (Private Account), the undefeated Phipps Stablechampion who captured the 1988 Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1). At stud, she produced My Flag (Easy Goer), winner of the 1995 Juvenile Fillies (G1).
My Flag then extended that lineage by producing Storm Flag Flying (Storm Cat), who likewise captured the Juvenile Fillies in 2002.
Three consecutive generations of Breeders' Cup winners stands as a unique achievement that remains one of the most awe-inspiring benchmarks in the event's history.
Another member of this exclusive club is Hollywood Wildcat (Kris S), winner of the 1993 Distaff (G1), who later produced War Chant (Danzig), hero of the 2000 Breeders' Cup Mile (G1).
The list is rounded out by Shared Account (Pleasantly Perfect), who took the 2010 Filly & Mare Turf (G1) before seeing her daughter Sharing (Speightstown) prevail in the 2019 Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1) nine years later.
With Newspaperofrecord, the list now adds a fifth name and a fresh testament to how racing excellence translates across generations.
It also marks a moment of special gratification for Coolmore, whose investment in the daughter of Lope de Vega as a blue-chip broodmare prospect yielded dividend with remarkable speed.
Furthermore, Benvenuto Cellini’s success highlights once more the impact of Frankel, whose influence as a stallion continues to expand among elite international winners.
For Newspaperofrecord, that 2018 victory had already carved out her place in Breeders' Cup history. Eight years later, through her second foal, she achieved something even rarer: returning to the winner's circle without ever having to set foot on the racetrack again.
