LEXINGTON, Kentucky (From a special correspondent).— The Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) boasts a rich history filled with unforgettable duels. Personal Ensign (Private Account) and Winning Colors (Caro) staged an epic battle in 1988; Beholder (Henny Hughes) and Songbird (Medaglia d'Oro) delivered another for the ages in 2016. This Saturday at Keeneland, Nitrogen (Medaglia d'Oro) and Fully Subscribed (Tiz the Law) could write the next thrilling chapter in that storied tradition.

Both 4-year-old mares arrive in peak condition, though the former holds the status of morning-line favorite at 6-5 odds.

“She's doing fantastic. She knows it's Breeders' Cup time. She completely changes the moment they put that purple towel on her,” assured Mark Casse, trainer of Nitrogen.

The pair met for the first time in June in the Ogden Phipps Stakes (G1) at Saratoga, where Nitrogen put on a dominant display to win by 12 3/4 lengths.

That performance, which earned a massive 113 Beyer Speed Figure, convinced Casse to test her against males in the Whitney Stakes (G1). She finished a courageous second to Sovereignty (Into Mischief), further validating her elite stature.

She subsequently returned to fillies and mares company, capturing the Beldame Stakes (G2) by 2 3/4 lengths without needing to reach top gear.

“I didn't expect her to be at her absolute peak after the effort in the Whitney. Regardless, she ran very well, and that race put her right where we wanted her for this spot,” Casse explained.

Fully Subscribed, conditioned by Chad Brown, has made significant strides since that wide defeat at Saratoga.

She bounced back to take the Shuvee Stakes (G2) before romping by 9 3/4 lengths in the Personal Ensign Stakes (G1), registering a 106 Beyer Speed Figure.

Her campaign concluded with an authoritative victory in the Spinster Stakes (G1), right over the Keeneland main track.

“I love the fact that she has already won over this track. She knows the surface, didn't have to ship, and arrives fully adapted. She has a lot going in her favor,” Brown commented.

The lineup lost two key contenders earlier in the week with the scratches of Scottish Lassie (McKinzie) and Splendora (Audible), the latter being the 2025 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1) winner.

With only seven runners remaining, the tactical setup could favor Nitrogen, though plenty of early pressure looms to keep her honest from the gate.

Prominent among those pressure elements are Immersive (Bernardini) and Super Corredora (Gun Runner),heroines of the 2024 and 2025 editions of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1), respectively.

Immersive, trained by Brad Cox, looks to regain her top form following back-to-back defeats.

“She loves Keeneland, where she captured a G1 as a 2-year-old, but she'll need a lot to go her way,” acknowledged Cox.

Super Corredora, representing John Sadler, comes off a victory in the Zenyatta Stakes (G2), though she is unlikely to enjoy an uncontested trip on the lead this time around.

Should the pacesetters cook up a grueling early tempo, Regaled (Mohaymen) and Measure (Essential Quality) stand ready to capitalize with their late runs.

Regaled finished third in the 2025 Distaff after making up ground from eleventh and enters off another victory in the Delaware Handicap (G3).

Measure, another Casse trainee, comes out of top-level sophomore company and similarly relies on a fast pace ahead of her.

“She is maturing and developing nicely. If they go too fast up front, she'll be closing strong late,” her trainer anticipated.

The field is completed by Eunomia (Tiz the Law), trained by Saffie Joseph Jr., who scored a major upset in the Clement L. Hirsch Stakes (G1) and arrives fresh off a layoff.

Nitrogen boasts the highest speed figures, while Fully Subscribed enters on a peak curve of improvement. Their rematch anchors the high drama of a Distaff poised to deliver pure magic.
