The 2025 champion dismantled her rivals in the Ogden Phipps Stakes (G1), drawing away by 12 3/4 lengths and finishing just a fraction off the track record for the 1800 meters

SARATOGA SPRINGS, New York (Special to Turf Diario).– There are horses that share a special relationship with certain racetracks. And then there are those that simply look as though they are playing on home turf. In the case of Nitrogen, Saratoga Race Course can already be considered her second home.
The 2025 champion 3-year-old filly dazzled once again this Friday at the traditional New York venue, where she delivered a simply devastating performance to capture the Ogden Phipps Stakes (G1-1800 m, dirt) and automatically secure a spot in the upcoming Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1), to be held this October at Keeneland.
Ridden by Jose Ortiz and conditioned by Mark Casse, the daughter of Medaglia d'Oro dominated from wire to wire and crossed the finish line with a 12 3/4-length advantage, a margin rarely seen in a race of such high caliber.
But that was not all. The clock stopped at 1m46s93/100, just 29 hundredths off the absolute track record for the distance at Saratoga, established by the unforgettable Lawyer Ron (Langfuhr) when he won the 2007 Whitney Handicap (G1) in 1m46s64/100.
"When they told him he was within one-fifth of the record, Jose replied: 'I could have broken it.' He told me he practically let her cruise in the final yards," related Casse, still marveled by the magnitude of the display.
The D. J. Stable representative, voted Champion 3-Year-Old Filly of her generation, maintains a perfect romance with Saratoga. She had already won the Alabama Stakes (G1) there last season, as well as the Wonder Again Stakes (G3) by no less than 17 lengths.
From the opening of the gates, the race was a monologue. Nitrogen set fractions of 23s74/100, 47s26/100, 1m10s48/100, and 1m34s66/100 without facing any pressure from her rivals. Ortiz let her do her thing, and the mare responded by widening the margin at every stage of the journey.
Behind her, Fully Subscribed (Tiz the Law) and Bless the Broken (Laoban) shared second place in a dead heat, while Regaled (Mohaymen) completed the paid positions in a short field of just 6 runners.
There was a brief moment of anxiety within the final 200 meters when the winner began to drift outward, forcing Ortizto correct her. However, there was never a sense that the victory could slip away.
"That's a characteristic of hers," explained Jon Green, a member of the ownership family. "Sometimes she gets distracted when she runs alone out front. You worry because in a G1 you are facing top-level mares, and you fear that could cost you dearly. But today it wasn't an issue. When Jose dismounted, he told me that from the instant the gates opened, he knew he was going to win."
The performance confirmed that Nitrogen is likely going through the best form of her career.
After kicking off the year with a victory in the Bayakoa Stakes (G3), she then finished third in the Azeri Stakes (G2) and second in the prestigious Apple Blossom Handicap (G1), both at Oaklawn Park. The return to Saratoga, however, seemed to reawaken her finest version.
For the Green family, moreover, the success carries a special flavor as she is a homebred: "We have a farm, a commercial operation, and horses in training. Winning with one bred by us is different," Green explained. "When Mark saw this filly as a yearling, he said she breathed a different kind of air. That's where the name Nitrogen came from."
With this resounding victory, the dark bay boosted her earnings to $2,730,854 and made it clear that she will be one of the division leaders among the older mares this season.
The ultimate target ahead already has a name: the Breeders' Cup Distaff. And if she arrives there in the same form she displayed this Friday, the rest of the field will have more than enough reasons to worry.
