The defending titleholder and reigning champion turf horse in the United States will clash this Saturday with the horse riding a six-race winning streak and dominating the North American miling division. The Woodbine Mile (G1) promises a massive spectacle, in addition to offering a direct berth into the Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1)

TORONTO, Canada (Special for Turf Diario).— Notable Speech and Deterministic will need no introduction when they step onto the track at Woodbine this Saturday. One arrives from Europe with a title to defend and a remarkable recent campaign in North America; the other is riding the absolute peak of his career, boasting 6 consecutive victories and standing as the undisputed benchmark among turf milers in the United States.

The Woodbine Mile (G1-1600m, turf), featuring a purse of CA$1,000,000, delivers the showdown everyone was eager to see. And the stakes go far beyond prestige: as part of the Win and You're In program, it guarantees the winner a fully covered gate in the Breeders' Cup Mile (G1).

For Notable Speech, Toronto also represents familiar and exceptionally happy hunting grounds. The son of Dubawiarrived here twelve months ago following a European campaign where he had gone winless in four G1 attempts, though his runner-up finish in the Prix Jacques Le Marois (G1) hinted that he was recapturing his top form.

That formidable racehorse resurfaced at Woodbine. Rallied from sixth position with a powerful burst to win by 1 3/4 lengths, he duplicated almost the exact same blueprint weeks later at Del Mar, closing from seventh to capture the Breeders' Cup Mile (G1) by 1 1/2 lengths.

Those two performances secured him championship honors and validated a formula Charlie Appleby and Godolphinhave perfected. They previously pulled off the Woodbine Mile-Breeders' Cup Mile double with Modern Games(Dubawi) in 2022, and Master of The Seas (Dubawi) in 2023.

Now they return along the same path, though Notable Speech arrives under different circumstances. He no longer needs to rediscover his form, having added two more G1 victories during 2026, most recently scoring convincingly in the City of York Stakes (G1-1400m) on August 22.

Appleby believes the layout at Woodbine fits his horse ideally, particularly its sweeping turns, as his lethal closing kick tends to be magnified when encountering a contested pace upfront. And early speed is something that should by no means be lacking this time.

A good portion of that pace could come from Deterministic, who lands in Canada operating as a absolute winning machine.

The son of Liam's Map was also in the championship picture in 2025, though his campaign was cut short in August after capturing the Fourstardave Stakes (G1), his second consecutive G1 triumph at Saratoga.

Far from slowing down, he elevated his form even higher during 2026. He has won his last 6 starts, successfully defending his titles in both the Manhattan Stakes (G1-1900m) and the Fourstardave Stakes (G1-1600m), two distinctly different contests that highlight his versatility.

It was precisely his latest score in the Fourstardave, by 1 1/2 lengths, that left regular rider Kendrick Carmoucheparticularly energized, deeming it the finest performance Deterministic has delivered to date.

The test will nonetheless feature a new variable. It marks the first appearance for Miguel Clement's pupil at Woodbine, as well as his first outing outside New York state since April 2025.

Carmouche understands that patience will prove vital. Deterministic generally races on the lead or pressing the pace, but the expansive stretch and unique turf course at Woodbine will demand careful energy distribution before asking for his ultimate effort.

That lays out one of the major tactical questions of the race. Notable Speech requires genuine tempo to unleash his explosive turn of foot; Deterministic possesses the tactical speed to control early position and dictate terms to his rivals.

Europe versus the United States. The defending champion against the hottest horse in training. The late closing charge of Notable Speech against the tactical precision and consistency of Deterministic.

And looming in the background, Keeneland awaits on October 31. The Woodbine Mile promises far more than a million-dollar G1 trophy: it may well preview the deciding battle for the upcoming Breeders' Cup Mile crown.
