Nysos Has a Destiny: Coolmore Announced His Purchase and Will Retire Him to Stud After the Breeders' Cup

MIDWAY, Kentucky (Special to Turf Diario).– One of the best horses in training in the United States has already secured his future as a stallion. Coolmore partners Susan Magnier, Michael Tabor, and Derrick Smith officially announced the acquisition of Nysos, who will continue competing through the remainder of the 2026 season in partnership with Baoma Corp. before retiring to launch his stud career at Ashford Stud.
The news arrived just two days after the spectacular demonstration offered by the son of Nyquist in the Metropolitan Handicap (G1) at Saratoga, where he dominated by 4 lengths and fell just 13 hundredths of a second short of the track record for the mile, confirming that he is going through the finest form of his campaign.
Trained by Bob Baffert, who has defined him on more than one occasion as "one of the smartest horses" he has prepared in his entire career, Nysos built a racing career as brilliant as it was unique.
He debuted at 2 years old with a crushing 10 1/2-length victory at Santa Anita Park and quickly validated his enormous potential by winning the Bob Hope Stakes (G3) by 8 3/4 lengths. Already at 3, he added the Robert B. Lewis Stakes (G3) by 7 1/2 lengths, but just when he seemed poised to become one of the stars of the Triple Crown, a minor physical setback forced him off that trail.
His return did not take place until age 4, after nearly fifteen months away from competition. Far from showing the effects of the long absence, he missed by just a neck to Mindframe (Constitution) in the Churchill Downs Stakes(G1) and then put together a string of victories that ultimately established him among the elite.
He won consecutively the Triple Bend Stakes (G3), the San Diego Handicap (G2), and finally achieved international consecration by capturing the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1), where he defeated by a narrow margin Citizen Bull(Into Mischief), another of Coolmore's stallion prospects, while Chancer McPatrick (McKinzie) completed the trifecta.
Already in 2026, Nysos further extended his prestige. He traveled to Saudi Arabia to face the Japanese champion Forever Young (Real Steel) in the Saudi Cup (G1) and went down with all the honors, a performance that led Baffert to describe that duel as "King Kong vs. Godzilla." Upon returning to the United States, he fully reaffirmed his status with the authoritative victory achieved in the Met Mile.
With just 10 lifetime starts, the bay amasses an impressive record of 8 triumphs and 2 second-place finishes, with earnings nearing 5.3 million dollars.
"Nysos represents so much more than a great racehorse to Charles and me," explained Susan Chu, owner of Baoma Corp. "Through him, we learned about patience and perseverance. We are deeply grateful to Bob Baffert for developing and guiding him throughout his entire campaign. We are also thrilled to have Coolmore handle the next chapter of his story. He will have every opportunity to become a stallion of massive influence, and we will support him by sending our finest stakes mares."
The transaction also strengthens a maternal family of tremendous prestige. Nysos was bred by Susie Atkins and is out of Zetta Z (Bernardini), who was acquired by Coolmore in 2024 for 2 million dollars. His second dam is none other than Unbridled Elaine (Unbridled's Song), winner of the 2001 Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) and one of the great genetic references for the Irish operation.
Following the victory in the Met Mile, Baffert summarized what many think about the horse: "I always believed he was one of the best older horses in training, and today he proved it once again."
Now, backed by one of the most powerful organizations in the world, Nysos will face the final months of his racing career with his sights set on the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) at Keeneland. Afterward, the time will come to begin a new stage, this time from the breeding shed, where the expectations are as high as those he generated from the very first day he stepped onto the track.
