In surprising news, the talented son of Nyquist will not race again following a diagnosis that revealed minor changes in his limbs, making it impossible to prepare him for the Breeders' Cup

DEL MAR, California (Special for Turf Diario).— The news caught the racing world by surprise. Just as all signs pointed toward him being one of the leading contenders for the upcoming Breeders' Cup Classic (G1), the extraordinary Nysos was officially retired from racing and will embark on a new career as a stallion at Ashford Stud, the North American headquarters for Coolmore.

The decision, announced on Monday, was not triggered by a debilitating injury or a physical breakdown that would compromise his future. During a routine veterinary evaluation, minor changes were detected on an imaging screen, leading trainer Bob Baffert and owners Baoma Corporation, along with their partners at Coolmore, to elect the most conservative route and prioritize the welfare of the horse.

"Nysos is not hurt or injured, but this preventative measure is simply about doing what is right by the horse. With those small changes observed, we just don't have enough time to prepare him for the Breeders' Cup the way we would like to. He gave us absolutely everything, and retiring him completely healthy and at the peak of his career is the correct decision," explained Baffert.

The move brings a curtain call to a brilliant campaign. The son of Nyquist leaves the track with a record of 10 starts, 8 wins, and 2 second-place finishes, alongside career earnings exceeding $5.2 million—figures that scarcely reflect the sheer impact of his every performance.

From early on, he made it clear that he was destined for greatness. He dominated the Bob Hope Stakes (G3) and the Robert B. Lewis Stakes (G3) during his 3-year-old campaign, but it was in full maturity that he reached a true international dimension.

His victory in the 2025 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1) confirmed his place among the global elite, a status he reaffirmed months later with a memorable performance in the Saudi Cup (G1), where he engaged in an unforgettable duel with Forever Young (Real Steel), missing out by the narrowest of margins in one of the most spectacular races of the season.

Earlier this year, Nysos further cemented his legacy by dominating the Metropolitan Handicap (G1) wire-to-wire at Saratoga, drawing off by four lengths against top-flight opposition and proving that he had reached the absolute zenith of his powers.

"He was brilliant from day one. He had a great mind, incredible natural speed, and rare intelligence. When he hit the gear and opened up, the margins he put on top-class horses were unreal. He made top-tier rivals look ordinary, and I have no doubt he will be a resounding success at stud," added Baffert.

For owners Charles Chu and Susan Chu, Nysos transcended mere sports statistics: "He is the horse every owner dreams of. For us, he represents one of the most significant chapters of our lives in racing. He is the reward for many years of dedication and commitment. We are deeply grateful to Bob Baffert for developing one of the finest horses we have ever owned, and immensely proud that Coolmore will now guide the next chapter of his story. We are confident he will leave a lasting impact as a stallion," remarked Susan Chu.

Coolmore officials likewise emphasized the caliber of the new addition to their roster. Charlie O'Connor, director of sales for the operation, stated that Nysos possesses all the credentials to become a premier sire: "He showed rare brilliance every time he stepped onto the track. He combines immense speed, outstanding physical conformation, and a top-class pedigree. He is a fantastic addition to our farm."

Bred in Kentucky by Susie Atkins, Nysos is out of the Bernardini mare Zetta Z—a dam purchased for $2 million—and his stud fee will be announced in the coming weeks.

With just ten racetrack appearances, Nysos bids farewell leaving behind the distinct impression that he still had so much more to give. However, his connections chose to protect his long-term future.

The goal now shifts to transmitting the exceptional talent he displayed on the track into the breeding shed, with the hope that future generations will inherit the speed, class, and dominance that established him as one of the finest dirt horses of recent years.
