Facing just two rivals, South America’s top horse failed to justify his overwhelming favoritism in the Gran Premio Latinoamericano (G1) local qualifier at Cidade Jardim in São Paulo, Brazil

SAO PAULO, Brazil—Racing always leaves room for the unexpected. Even more so when races are contested with small fields, where tactical developments can become treacherous and any detail can tip the scales. That was exactly what happened this Saturday at Cidade Jardim, where the heavy favorite Obataye (Courtier) suffered an unexpected defeat in the Sao Paulo qualifier for the Gran Premio Latinoamericano (G1), a result that now casts doubt on his presence at the great continental event in April at Monterrico, where he would defend his title.

The race seemed set up as a confirmation for the powerful representative of Haras Rio Iguassú, who arrived as the natural candidate, but the return of Pivot Central ended up completely changing the script.

The son of Salto had not competed for nine months, since July of last year, but he reappeared at his peak to deliver a performance of immense character. The 4-year-old chestnut, bred and racing for the colors of Haras Fazenda Boa Vista, responded to the careful work of Emerson Garcia and found in jockey Jeane Alves the exact dose of precision and composure.

From the very start, the jockey made a clear decision: set the pace and control the race from the front. Pivot Centralremained ahead of Obataye and Express Moon (Agnes Gold) throughout, managing the tempo intelligently in a contest that, due to its small number of participants, demanded maximum tactical attention.

As the meters passed, Alves rationed energy, knowing the real test would come in the final straight when the favorite launched his offensive. And so it happened.

Upon entering the straight, Obataye advanced strongly, drawing level with the leader and unleashing a vibrant head-to-head battle that stretched to the very wire. For several seconds, it seemed logic would prevail, but Pivot Centralshowed a remarkable dose of grit and quality, resisting always glued to the rails.

When the wire arrived, the difference was minimal but sufficient: a nose in favor of Pivot Central, who thus sealed a resounding victory. Express Moon completed the frame in third place.

The final time was 2m 4s 30/100, in a performance that marked the fourth win in just six starts for the winner.

Beyond the indisputable merit of Pivot Central, the news shaking the regional landscape is the fall of Obataye, who arrived with firm aspirations of representing Brazil once again in the Latinoamericano. The defeat was surprising not only for the result but also for the context: a complicated tactical development, typical of races with few participants, ended up conspiring against the favorite.

Now the big question is whether the horse will still travel to Peru or if his team will reconsider the plan after this setback.

What is certain is that, just a few weeks away from the Latinoamericano, the board has shifted unexpectedly. And the name that caused the shock was Pivot Central, a returnee who came back from a long layoff to write one of the strongest surprises of the season at Cidade Jardim.
