MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay (Special for Turf Diario).- Amid a fantastic weekend for racing worldwide, Hipódromo Nacional de Maroñas delivered its own high-class Sunday, highlighted by the brilliance of Brazilian-bred Obstacle and Voice Out, who captured the Gran Premio Jockey Club (G3-2000 m, dirt) and Gran Premio Selección (G3-2000 m, dirt), respectively.

Obstacle, who debuted locally with a record-setting win in the Clásico Criadores Nacionales (L), confirmed his talent with a commanding performance, defeating Zelenski (Vineyard Haven) by three lengths, while Tadow Star (Midshipman)—winner of the Gran Premio Polla de Potrillos (G3)—finished third, half a length further back.

Ridden by Everton Rodrígues, the Hofburg–Come and See (Elusive Quality) colt took the lead from the start, with Tadow Star tracking closely. Once into the stretch, Obstacle drew away comfortably, while Zelenski rallied from behind to claim second, taking advantage of the favorite’s fading effort. Representing Stud Duplo Ouro, bred by Santa María de Araras and trained by Pablo Duarte, Obstacle covered the 2,000 meters on heavy dirt in 2:03.97, nearly two seconds faster than Voice Out, who won the Selección in 2:05.64.

For Voice Out, representing Calucho’s, it was a reward for a stellar campaign in the prep races: she had previously won the Clásico Pablo Piacenza Maldonado on turf, finished third in the Criterium Potrancas (G2), and placed second in both the Antonio Marsiglia and the Polla de Potrancas (G2).

Ridden by Yair Pereira, the Outstrip–Voice From (Northern Afleet) filly raced with patience along the inside, biding her time. In the stretch, she found a seam and battled briefly with Garufera (El Abanderado) and Linda Muchacha (Alcorano), eventually drawing clear to beat the latter by 1 3/4 lengths. The favorite, Tantan Royal (Midshipman)—winner of the Polla—could do no better than eighth, 17 lengths back, while Patriótica (Trinniberg) also ran poorly, finishing last under restraint from her rider.

Other highlights of the day included the Gran Premio de Honor (L-2400 m), won comfortably by Native Extreme (Emcee), another Santa María de Araras graduate from Brazil, who defeated the veteran Pluto (Discreetly Mine) by six lengths under Vagner Leal for trainer Antonio Cintra, represented by Jorge Rey. In the Plinio Oribe y Andrés Oribe Deus (L-1000 m, dirt)La Sobrina (Trinniberg) stamped her authority, winning by three lengths over Peligrosa (Kodiak Kowboy) and earning her first stakes victory at Maroñas for jockey Ernesto Tonna.
