Oday carried the Argentine flag to victory in the first classic of the Monterrico Triple Crown
The daughter of Il Campione, bred by Haras La Providencia, scored a decisive victory in the Clásico Miguel Fort Magot (G3-1600m), the opening leg of the turf Triple Crown for 3-year-old fillies. Juan Suárez recorded a stakes double, having also sent out Farukin to win the Clásico Claudio Fernández Concha (G3)
LIMA, Peru (Special for Turf Diario).— The first leg of the turf Triple Crown for 3-year-old fillies at Monterricocarried an Argentine stamp. Oday made a major leap forward on Sunday in her young campaign to capture the Clásico Miguel Fort Magot (G3-1600m), confirming the high expectations that accompanied her arrival in Peru while establishing herself among the top local juveniles.
Carrying the colors of Stud Jet Set, the dark bay responded brilliantly to trainer Juan Suárez, who presented her in peak condition, while jockey Víctor Salazar delivered a flawless ride from the saddle.
Oday drew off to win by 3 lengths over La Kenny (Brentley), a decisive margin in the event that marks the start of the classic trail on the grass.
Further back, a half-length behind the runner-up, Susuka (Draft Pick) finished third, while Honey Chuspi (Donjuan) crossed in fourth, another 3/4 length behind.
For Oday, it marked just her second victory in 4 starts, but given the stakes and her commanding style of victory, it easily represents her most significant achievement to date.
Her victory also showcased strong Argentine roots. Bred by Haras La Providencia, she is by champion Il Campioneout of Kollen, by Orpen—a genetic bloodline representing some of the most successful lines in domestic breeding in recent years.
With this triumph, Oday elevated her career earnings to 33,230 soles and, most importantly, positioned herself ideally to pursue further glory as the Triple Crown series progresses toward tougher tests.
The Monterrico card featured a single dominant storyline on the turf, as Juan Suárez swept both opening 3-year-old classic events on the surface.
In the colts division, Farukin proved superior in the Clásico Claudio Fernández Concha (G3-1600m).
Ridden by Carlos Javier Herrera, the Stud La Libanesa representative secured a 1 3/4-length victory over Dr. Aguilar (Tacitus), while General Danny (Tiz the Law) finished third, 1 1/4 lengths back, and Golden Fox(Muwaary) rounded out the superfecta, a further quarter-length behind.
A son of Muwaary out of Fosha, by Sixties Icon, Farukin was bred by Haras Los Azahares and notched his fourth win in just 6 career outings, pushing his earnings to 140,350 soles.
The lone dark spot of the contest involved the Argentine colt Unabomber (Hit It a Bomb), who suffered an injury during the opening 500 meters and unseated his rider.
Sunday thus inaugurated the turf Triple Crown at Monterrico with Juan Suárez dominating both divisions. For Argentine racing, it provided a distinct reason to celebrate.
Oday was born in Olavarría, crossed international borders, and secured her first graded victory in Lima. The Triple Crown series has only just begun, but the daughter of Il Campione has made it clear she intends to be one of its defining stars.
