The defending champion (photo) and Aidan O’Brien's sensation colt lead the nine confirmed runners for this Wednesday's marquee clash at York. KNAVESMIRE, England (Special for Turf Diario).— Speculation has come to an end. Ombudsman and Constitution River will stand toe-to-toe this Wednesday in the Juddmonte International (G1), the crown jewel of the opening day of York's Ebor Festival and one of the most eagerly anticipated showdowns of the entire European season.
A total of nine horses were declared for the contest, yet escaping the central duel proves impossible. On one side stands Ombudsman, defending champion and standard-bearer among the older division. On the other, Constitution River, the sensation colt who continues to pass every test and must now face what is likely the toughest challenge of his young career. Both arrive, moreover, undefeated in 2026.
Trained by John and Thady Gosden, Ombudsman, a son of Night of Thunder, returns to the scene of one of his greatest triumphs. Winner of the International in 2025, he has kept his stature pristine this year with a commanding victory in the Prince of Wales's Stakes (G1) at Royal Ascot.
The clouds that gathered a few days ago, when his price inexplicably drifted in the betting markets, appear to have fully cleared. John Gosden stepped forward to confirm he was thoroughly pleased with the horse, and his presence has now been officially sealed.
Acting as his wingman will be Devil's Advocate (Too Darn Hot), whose duty will once again be to ensure a true tempo for the champion.
Constitution River, the ultimate test
While Ombudsman brings proven class and experience, Constitution River offers that unmistakable aura of a horse whose true ceiling remains unknown.
The son of Wootton Bassett has constructed a flawless 2026 campaign for Aidan O’Brien, highlighted by victories in the Prix du Jockey Club (G1) at Chantilly and the Coral-Eclipse (G1) at Sandown.
In France, he overcame a heavily compromised draw to lead a historic 1-2-3 sweep for the Ballydoyle squad, while at Sandown he took an even bigger step forward by defeating older horses for the first time. Now comes York.
O’Brien will saddle two additional contenders: Hawk Mountain (Wootton Bassett), who finished behind Constitution River in both the Jockey Club and the Eclipse, and Action (Frankel), who looks poised to help set the pace from the front.
With Devil's Advocate on one side and Action on the other, a honest pace should not be lacking—an essential ingredient that could make the head-to-head between the two main protagonists all the more captivating.
Item looks to crash the party
However, the Juddmonte International is far from a two-horse race. Item (Frankel) stands out as a threat capable of upsetting the scripts. Racing for Juddmonte and trained by Andrew Balding, the colt captured the Dante Stakes (G2) and carries only a single blemish on his record: his effort in the Epsom Derby (G1), contested over a longer trip and under grueling conditions.
Back at a distance far better suited to his profile, he rediscovered his best form and arrives intent on proving he belongs at the highest level.
Also in the lineup is Almaqam (Lope de Vega), one of the star performers of the season for Ed Walker. Winner of the Tattersalls Gold Cup (G1), he will cross paths with Ombudsman once more after finishing fourth behind him at Royal Ascot.
Pride of Arras (New Bay), conditioned by Ralph Beckett, comes off a sharp resurgence when chasing home Item in the York Stakes (G2), a performance that earned him his place in this elite lineup.
Zaydann, the lone raider
The international element comes courtesy of France via Zaydann, trained by Francis-Henri Graffard for Aga Khan Studs.
The son of Dubawi is riding a wave of form, landing at York backed by five consecutive victories. His latest came in the Prix de Vichy (G3), where he produced what was easily the career-best performance of his campaign.
While his backform suggests he still has to prove he can compete on equal terms with titans like Ombudsman and Constitution River, his steady progression and deep pedigree hint that further improvement remains within reach.
He will, notably, be the only participant trained outside Great Britain and Ireland.
Everything is set for one of those clashes that can define a full season.
Ombudsman holds the crown, the experience, and an unbeaten record this year. Constitution River possesses youth, a towering upward trajectory, and that element of mystery reserved for horses that have yet to hit their limit.
Come Wednesday at York, there will be no more room for theories. Ombudsman versus Constitution River. The champion versus the challenger. And a Juddmonte International poised to yield a definitive answer as to who rules Europe's middle-distance division.
