Ombudsman Takes Aim at the Juddmonte International as Gosden Anticipates a Dream Clash with Constitution River

The defending champion worked on Saturday with an eye on the major clash at the Ebor Festival, where he will return to York to face the Eclipse winner. His trainer assured that he enters in peak form, describing the eagerly awaited showdown as "what racing needs"

NEWMARKET, England (Special for Turf Diario).— The countdown to one of the most anticipated clashes of the European season is underway. Ombudsman, defending champion of the Juddmonte International Stakes (G1), continues to fine-tune his preparation for the major engagement at York, where he will finally lock horns with Constitution River (Wootton Bassett), the brilliant winner of the Coral-Eclipse (G1).

The Godolphin star, trained by John and Thady Gosden, completed a easy breeze on Saturday that left his trainer fully satisfied, confirming that the horse is progressing as planned ahead of the Ebor Festival.

"Ombudsman worked on Saturday morning and did it very well. We are very happy with him. Everything is on track for York, and it would be good to get a racecourse gallop into him on the turf beforehand—hopefully, we can manage that," Gosden commented.

The British trainer made no secret of his excitement for a showdown racing fans have eagerly awaited ever since the decision was made to bypass the Eclipse, clearing the path for Constitution River to solidify his ascent among Europe's top middle-distance horses: "It was a great performance when he won the Juddmonte last year. This is exactly what racing needs—everyone is looking forward to seeing what happens at York."

Ombudsman enters the Juddmonte International on the heels of another banner campaign. After kicking off the year with a victory at Meydan, he returned to England to annex the Brigadier Gerard Stakes (G3) before successfully defending his title in the Prince of Wales's Stakes (G1) at Royal Ascot, proving that, at age five, he remains at the peak of his powers.

Following that victory, Gosden elected to skip the Eclipse, believing the Sandown layout does not entirely suit his charge.

"At Sandown, he was a bit like an old boxer. It's probably not his favorite track, especially with the uphill finish. He is much more comfortable at a track like York."

The handler also highlighted the maturity acquired by the son of Night Of Thunder: "As the years go by, horses learn to race with more intelligence. They aren't as exuberant as when they are young. At five, they are fully developed and experienced, which makes everything even more exciting."

While Ombudsman commands the spotlight ahead of the summer's marquee duel, the Clarehaven team also celebrated the emergence of two promising prospects at Newmarket.

On Saturday, 2-year-old Spirited Gesture (Kingman), sporting the colors of Juddmonte, debuted with a convincing victory in a novice stakes, following in the footsteps of G1 winners Desert Flower (Night of Thunder) and Commissioning (Kingman), who both launched their careers in that very race.

A day earlier, Without Prejudice made a big impression when drawing off to a four-and-a-half-length triumph over 2,000 meters on the July Course. Running for Lord Lloyd-Webber, the daughter of Starman is a half-sister to the remarkable Emily Upjohn (Sea the Stars), runner-up in the Oaks and later winner of the Coronation Cup (G1).

Gosden made it clear that the filly's future will be handled with patience: "She is a very nice filly, but she has needed time to mature, and we have no intention of rushing her. Her sister improved dramatically with age, and we expect a similar progression here. She might have one or two more runs this year, but the primary target will be next season."

Meanwhile, all eyes remain fixed on York, where the long-awaited showdown between Ombudsman and Constitution River promises to be one of the signature events on the European calendar. The defending champion aims to reassert his dominance, while the Eclipse hero looks to prove the time has come to pass the torch at the top of the division.
