John Gosden confirmed that Godolphin's formidable horse has been pre-entered for Keeneland, following his spectacular victory over Calandagan in the Champion Stakes (G1). He will target his sixth G1 title while tackling the 2400-meter distance for the first time before entering stallion duties

NEWMARKET, England (Special for Turf Diario).— Ombudsman may still have one final chapter reserved for his extraordinary racing campaign. Following his dominant victory in the Champion Stakes (G1) at Ascot, the Godolphinrepresentative remains on track for the Breeders' Cup Turf (G1), set for Saturday, October 31 at Keeneland over 2400 meters on the turf.

The prospect, which began taking shape immediately following his triumph on British Champions Day, received significant confirmation this Monday from John Gosden, who announced the horse has already been pre-entered for the American event.

“We entered him for the Breeders' Cup this morning. He came out of his race at Ascot very well, and we are giving serious consideration to running in the Turf,” the trainer explained to the Press Association agency.

The son of Night of Thunder, who will enter stud duty in 2027, could thus find an ideal farewell from the track as he seeks to add a sixth G1 victory to his career record.

His latest performance was nothing short of spectacular. At Ascot, Ombudsman defeated Calandagan (Gleneagles) by nearly four lengths, reversing the finish of the 2025 Champion Stakes, where he had finished runner-up behind the Francis-Henri Graffard trainee.

With William Buick in the irons, the Godolphin colorbearer produced a formidable burst of acceleration that left his rivals without answers, confirming his elite caliber over 2000 meters.

The victory brought his tally of top-flight triumphs to five, including two editions of the Prince of Wales's Stakes (G1) at Royal Ascot, the 2025 Juddmonte International Stakes (G1), and this year's Dubai Turf (G1).

A new challenge at 2400 meters

The primary question mark heading into the Breeders' Cup Turf revolves around distance, as Ombudsman has never competed over 2400 meters.

However, Gosden believes the horse's traits will allow him to handle the requirement, particularly given his ability to settle comfortably in transit and kick with explosive speed when called upon by his rider.

The trainer also noted that the victory at Ascot earns him access to the event via the Win and You're In program, which awards a berth to selected winners of qualifying races.

“It's an attractive option because he earns a berth to run—a win-and-you're-in position—thanks to his victories at Royal Ascot and in the Champion Stakes. It is a great opportunity and one we ought to look at closely,” he explained.

The horse's recovery following his effort on Saturday will prove decisive in reaching a final determination, though the initial indications have been encouraging.

In early ante-post markets, Ombudsman stands as the 6-4 favorite ahead of Diamond Necklace (St Mark's Basilica), the Aidan O'Brien filly coming off a third-place finish in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (G1), who is priced at 5-2.

The Ballydoyle representative, a winner of multiple G1 events, looms as one of his primary rivals in a contest expected to attract top international turf specialists.

For Ombudsman, the assignment presents a combination of milestones: his initial appearance over 2400 meters and the opportunity to close out his career competing beyond European soil.

Godolphin and Gosden have yet to finalize whether they will make the trip to Kentucky, but the entry marks a concrete step toward that possibility.

After outclassing Calandagan at Ascot and reaffirming his place among the world's elite over 2000 meters, Ombudsman could seek one final glory before embarking on his stallion career.

And accomplishing that at the Breeders' Cup would undoubtedly provide a farewell fitting for a champion of his stature.
