The Empire Aztec colt is in peak form and faces tough competition in the Especial Mangangá

LA PLATA.- The Especial Mangangá carries stakes-level form on paper and will be the centerpiece of Thursday’s double-feature card at La Plata, contested over 1,100 meters for four-year-olds and up with three or more wins.
It’s a difficult race to call, though the current form of Oro Azteca (Empire Aztec), combined with his 54-kilogram impost, gives him a slight edge over the rest. The colt made headlines when he clearly took the Handicap Haras Don Florentino, and then traveled to Palermo to offer an improved effort in the Clásico Paraguay (G3).
That day, he finished third, 5 1/2 lengths behind Le Cornette (Emmanuel), the leading sprinter at present, losing second place by only half a length and leaving behind Bailarín de Venecia (Angiolo) and three-time winner Labrado (Le Blues), among others.
Also in the mix is Le Massif (Le Ken, 56), who disappointed in the Especial La Plata Capital but had previously scored in the Julio Corte (L) and Mariano Moreno classics.
After 222 days off, Arrosto (Manipulator, 52) returns, having retired in top form after defeating stakes winners Vivante(Lizard Island), Pripioca Mío (Lucky Island) and Le Massif in a standout performance.
Payucano (Mask, 52) also merits attention, finishing a close third in the Especial La Plata Capital, just a head and a nose behind Es Arisocrático (Angiolo) and Aroma Rim (Remote), proving he can be competitive here.
Not to be overlooked are Viejos Tiempos Mask (Mask, 52) and Yukon Jack (Remote, 56), who finished second and third, respectively, to Oro Azteca in the Handicap Haras Don Florentino.
At 11 years old, Sally Ray (Russian Ray, 56) continues to seek glory, while another veteran of note is Vespaciano (Daniel Boone, 52), who comes in with positive form he will look to confirm. Curioso Azteca (Empire Aztec, 54) and Rodo(Flowing Rye, 54) complete the field.
