The New York State Gaming Commission has issued a 30-day suspension to jockey Paco López after holding him responsible for the multi-horse spill during the running of the Wild Applause Stakes at Saratoga Race Course, an incident that resulted in four horses falling. The Mexican-born rider has formally appealed the sanction, allowing him to continue riding pending a final resolution of the legal recourse

SARATOGA SPRINGS, New York (Special for Turf Diario).— The New York State Gaming Commission has issued a 30-day suspension to jockey Paco López after determining that he engaged in "careless riding" during the Wild Applause Stakes (L), contested this past July 3rd during the opening day of the Saratoga race meeting, where a striking multi-horse spill involved four competitors.
According to the official ruling, López, who was aboard I Love Giraffes (Charlatan), triggered the incident when his mount clipped the heels of Pillar of Beauty (Caracaro), striking into her front leg and falling near the 400-meter pole. As a consequence, Lovely Grey (Vekoma), Paris Carver (Bolt d'Oro), and Smexy (Mehmas), who were tracking closely behind, were unable to avoid the fallen rival and also went down.
The Mexican-born professional has formally submitted an appeal and secured a stay of the suspension, allowing him to continue competing until a definitive resolution is reached on the matter, which is expected within the upcoming weeks.
The worst part of the accident was suffered by I Love Giraffes, who sustained a fractured hip that ended any possibility of a return to the racetrack. The other three fillies escaped without serious injuries.
Regarding the jockeys, López emerged unhurt, as did Tyler Gaffalione and Dylan Davis. The situation was different for Venezuelan rider Javier Castellano, who suffered a minor lower back injury, forcing him to stand down from the remainder of his weekend engagements and sidelining him from competitive action for approximately three weeks.
This is not the first time López has faced disciplinary actions. In September 2025, he was handed a six-month suspension by HISA after accumulating various infractions, which included a whip violation when winning the Forego Stakes (G1) aboard Book'em Danno (Bucchero) at Saratoga. During that suspension, the jockey continued riding in Louisiana, a state that was not under HISA jurisdiction at the time.
