Palermo Modified Its Purse Structure, Featuring Increases and Decreases

After maintaining the same purse levels in July as in June—prior to the official birthday shift—certain categories will benefit from an increase, while others will see the opposite
The Hipódromo Argentino de Palermo announced Thursday adjustments to its purse structure that will take effect for August meetings, featuring increases for certain categories alongside reductions for others. The update comes after July maintained the same payout levels established in June, prior to the traditional birthday transition in the racing calendar.
Among the divisions benefiting from the change are the handicaps. For instance, the Handicap Juan Bautista Udaondo, scheduled for this afternoon, awards $6,200,000 to the winner. Had it been held on or after August 1, however, the first prize would have risen to $7,000,000—an increase of more than 10 percent.
The 3-year-old division will also enjoy boosted payouts. Broadly speaking, contests for the sophomore crop will see increases hovering near 10 percent. A maiden event over 1000 meters, which currently awards $7,000,000 to the victor, will rise to $7,700,000. For one-win non-winners over the same distance, top prize will grow from $8,000,000 to $8,500,000, representing an improvement of roughly 7 percent.
The outlook shifts, however, for 4-, 5-, and 6-year-olds, who face reductions across their purses. A maiden race for 4-year-olds over 1400 meters, whose winner currently receives $7,400,000, will decrease to $6,500,000—a drop of nearly 15 percent. Similar reductions will impact the remaining categories for older horses.
In comparison to the country's other major racecourses, Palermo maintains a clear advantage across several tiers. Currently, a 3-year-old maiden race over 1200 meters pays $7,700,000 to the winner, compared to the $5,450,000 offered by San Isidro and the $4,840,000 provided by La Plata—differences that remain quite pronounced among the three major venues.
