LA PLATA, Argentina (Special to Turf Diario).— A patient, well-judged ride from Gonzalo Borda allowed Payucano(Mask, 59.5kg) to gain revenge on Glorioso Rim (Remote, 57.5kg) and land the Handicap Hipódromo de San Isidro, the feature event on Tuesday’s card at La Plata, contested over 1200 metres on the fast dirt.

Racing for Stud Araci’s, Payucano had finished third, three lengths behind that same rival in the Handicap Haras Dilú, but on that occasion had been conceding five kilos—an impost difference now reduced to just two.

In a race that saw Indy Pro (Indy Point, 54kg) and Oro Azteca (Empire Aztec, 58kg) dispute the early lead, Payucano was settled patiently in mid-pack, while Glorioso Rim tracked closer to the pace in a tightly bunched field.

Turning for home, Borda showed notable composure, waiting for room rather than losing ground by angling wide. The opening finally appeared approaching the final 350 metres and Payucano responded decisively, quickening past Glorioso Rim to take control and sustain the advantage through the wire.

The margin was one length at the finish, with Oro Azteca third, 3 1/2 lengths back after getting the better of Indy Pro, who was fourth by a neck. The final time was 1:11.85.

Sent off the betting favourite, Payucano was bred by Haras La Valkiria, which enjoyed a double on the afternoon, and is trained by Marcelo Sueldo at San Isidro’s Campo 2, though officially saddled by Juan Pablo E. Díaz.

This marked the sixth victory of the gelding’s career. He had previously captured the Clásico Estrellas Azuleñas at Azul and recorded several solid placings at stakes level, including a third in the Clásico General Manuel Belgrano (G3).

Payucano is out of Wildcat Kelli (Wildcat Heir), an American import who won once in Argentina and has also produced another multiple winner in Don’t Bite Me (Falling Sky).
