Saphirus Blue’s victory provided the perfect setting to pay tribute to the champion of the 2025 Torneo Apertura, a title that traces its origins back to that very first success on the racetrack

Platense’s 2025 Torneo Apertura title was more than a sporting achievement—it was a triumph for a neighborhood, an identity, and a sentiment passed down through generations. That celebration found a unique extension at the Hipódromo Argentino de Palermo on Monday with the running of the Premio Club Atlético Platense - Campeón Apertura 2025, a tribute from the world of racing to the historic champion.
According to club lore, the group of young men who founded Platense on May 25, 1905, financed the idea with winnings from a bet on Gay Simón, a runner for Stud Platense at the now-defunct Hipódromo Nacional. In homage, they adopted the stud’s name and silks—originally planned to be red and black—as the club’s now-iconic brown and white colors.
The raceday atmosphere was festive and family-oriented, while the competitive spirit of the races remained intact. The Paddock Grandstand was filled with fans proudly wearing Platense jerseys, cheering for players and club officials in attendance. Together, they gathered at the winners’ circle to witness Saphirus Blue’s authoritative victory.
A son of Daniel Boone out of Safira Azul (by Heliostatic), Saphirus Blue races for Stud Blacktype Bloodstock, is trained by Carlos D. Etchechoury, and was expertly handled by Eduardo Ortega Pavón, who guided him to a 1 1/2-length win over favored Contursi (Full Mast) in 2:18.61 for the distance—his second win from nine starts.
In the winner’s enclosure, alongside connections, Platense players and executives took part in a cheerful trophy ceremony, during which Ortega Pavón donned the champion's jersey, adding a symbolic touch to the occasion.
The Premio Club Atlético Platense - Campeón Apertura 2025 will remain etched in the hearts of “Calamar” supporters and serve as a reminder that, in some poetic way, the club owes its very origin to a racetrack.
The bond between Platense and horse racing is as strong as ever, carrying with it the legacy of a name that embodies passion, pride, and perseverance.
