Prix d’Ispahan renamed to honor the late Aga Khan IV

France Galop has renamed the historic Grade 1 event to pay tribute to one of the most influential figures in the history of international racing and breeding

PARIS, France (Special to Turf Diario)— France Galop has announced a major tribute to the late His Highness the Aga Khan IV, renaming the historic Prix d’Ispahan (G1) in his honor. Moving forward, the race will be known as the Prix Aga Khan IV (Prix d’Ispahan), a recognition of his unparalleled impact on global racing and breeding following his passing in February 2025.

The change was finalized by France Galop’s Board of Directors in coordination with the Aga Khan family and The Aga Khan Studs. For the next three years, the original title will remain in parentheses before the race officially transitions to the Prix Aga Khan IV.

“It was the wish of France Galop to ensure the racing world remembers this remarkable figure,” said Guillaume de Saint-Seine, president of France Galop. “His legacy in breeding and racing is immense”.

The Prix d’Ispahan was selected for its historical ties to the Aga Khan dynasty. Founded in 1873 to honor a visit from the Shah of Persia, the race is named after the ancient Persian capital. The Aga Khan IV won the nine-furlong feature six times with stars such as Jour et Nuit III (1964), Silver Shark (1966), Zeddaan (1968), Sendawar (2000), Valixir(2005), and Sageburg (2008).

“My family and I are deeply honored,” said Princess Zahra Aga Khan. “This is a fitting tribute to his lifelong dedication to French racing”.

The 2026 renewal is set for Thursday, May 21, at ParisLongchamp. The race will headline the inaugural “JeuXdi des Champions,” a festive Thursday evening card that also features the Prix Vicomtesse Vigier (G1) and the Prix du Palais Royal (G3).

By linking his name to one of Longchamp’s most prestigious events, France Galop ensures that the Aga Khan’sextraordinary contribution to the sport will be celebrated for generations to come.
