The G2 marathon at Palermo brings together a field with no clear standout, making any result possible

Friday promises to be an enjoyable day of racing at Hipódromo Argentino de Palermo, with several promising condition races and a pair of enticing stakes. While the sprinters will take center stage in the Diamond Jubilee, the main feature will be the stayers’ test for fillies and mares: the Clásico Ignacio, Ignacio F. e Ignacio Correas (G2), honoring one of Argentina’s most historic turf families, the name behind Haras Las Ortigas.

Run over a grueling 2500 meters on dirt and offering a winner’s prize of 16,575,000 pesos (with a total purse exceeding 34 million pesos), the race drew a competitive field of eight without a clear standout.

At six years old and perhaps making her final start, Punta Turquesa (Fortify) will aim to cap her strong career with a graded win, a prize that has narrowly eluded her so far. Trained by Enrique Martín Ferro, she has been consistently competitive, though all her best efforts have come on turf. She’s raced just twice on dirt, both at the start of her career without success, but maybe the third time will be the charm, coming off a fourth-place finish behind Lacanian Ink (Fragotero) in the Clásico Paseana (G2).

A serious danger will be Ceniza Pampa (Hat Ninja), this year’s heroine of the Gran Premio Gilberto Lerena (G1), where she actually finished ahead of Punta Turquesa. Racing for Stud Rodolfo Pedro, she owns strong dirt form and her class could prove decisive here.

Flavie (Seahenge) keeps grinding out solid runs, like her recent second to Jin Jin (Full Mast) in La Plata’s Especial Snow Cat, while Risible (Orpen) is the type of well-regarded mare who could surprise at any time under the care of Roberto Bullrich.

Angelic Champ (Cima de Triomphe) returns to Palermo after an easy conditional score on San Isidro’s turf, and don’t forget Persofona (Hurricane Cat) once defeated Ceniza Pampa in the Clásico Diego White (G3) at La Plata as a juvenile.
