LIMA, Peru (Special for Turf Diario).- The countdown toward the 2026 Gran Premio Latinoamericano (G1) has already begun to take concrete shape. The Organización Sudamericana de Fomento del SPC (OSAF) confirmed the first two horses nominated by the Jockey Club del Peru, the host entity for the 42nd edition of the regional meeting, which will be held on Sunday, April 26, 2026, on the turf at Hipodromo de Monterrico.

The designation came following the Clásico Baldomero Aspíllaga (G3), a traditional qualifying race here, which was decided this past February 15 over 2000 meters.

The winner was the Argentine colt Puppi’s Husband (Fortify), defending the colors of Stud Jet Set and bred at Haras Vacación. Trained by Juan Suárez Villaroel and ridden by Carlos Trujillo, he prevailed over 2000 meters in 2m1s78/100, securing his spot for the challenge.

Finishing second, by just a head, was the Chilean Khamal (Mendelssohn), also 3 years old. The Chileanrepresentative was coming off a victory in the Derby Nacional (G1) in November and had already crossed paths with Puppi’s Husband in that classic instance. This time, the outcome was reversed, but the result ended up benefiting both, as they both obtained nominations for the 2026 Latino.

The race will be contested over 2000 meters on the turf, under weight-for-age conditions (3 years old and up), with a total purse of US$300,000 and a maximum of 16 participants.

OSAF reminded that the pre-registration period for extra-classified horses remains open until February 20.

The key points of the schedule are:

  • February 20: closing of applications for extra-classified horses (includes pre-entry payment).

  • Week of March 20: official designation of extra-classified horses.

  • March 20: deadline for the payment of the entry balance (US$24,000) for confirmed horses.

  • March 16: deadline for nominations of horses from member racetracks.

Additionally, flights for horses coming from abroad will be scheduled between 7 and 10 days before the event.

As will be remembered, the Jockey Club Argentino had nominated Full Keynote (Full Mast) following his triumph in the Gran Premio Miguel A. Martínez de Hoz (G1), but having tested positive, that spot remains on hold until the case is resolved.

With Puppi’s Husband and Khamal as the first confirmed names, the 2026 Latino begins to build its narrative. Monterrico will once again be the epicenter of South American turf, and expectation is already building in the region, with connections beginning to draw up strategies to be present in the race that, every year, crowns the best on the continent.
