LA PLATA—The Handicap Hipódromo Argentino de Palermo shapes up as one of the standout events on Thursday’s card at this track, run over 1400 meters for horses four and up with a minimum requirement of three wins.

Heading the market—and making his first-ever appearance at La Plata—is Quebracho Joy (Fortify, 58.5kg), who looks to rediscover the form he displayed through much of the season, including his victory in the Clásico Japón (L) on the Palermo turf.

A recent fifth in the Handicap Equalize, he now faces a tough pair from Stud Pauli: Silencio Dramático (Grand Reward, 58kg) and Talento Emergente (Equal Talent, 55.5kg). The former comes off a disappointing effort in the Joaquín V. González (G2), while the latter exits a runner-up finish in a San Isidro allowance. Notably, house rider Gonzalo Borda has opted to stay aboard Talento Emergente.

Winners at the lower level, Qué Compañero (Global Hunter, 56.5kg) and Colour Vision (Univisión, 55kg) will try to build on recent success, while the presence of Notable Island (Lizard Island, 59.5kg) adds an element of intrigue.

Carrying topweight, Notable Island was the winner of the 2024 Clásico Jockey Club de la Provincia de Buenos Aires (G2) and the Clásico Jockey Club de Azul (L), though he has struggled for consistency this season, mixing poor efforts with occasional flashes of his old form. A surprise is well within his capabilities.
